            Description
This photograph from 1963 shows Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and other dignatories, knighting someone at Government House in Sydney. The photograph depicts the action of 'dubbing', a light blow with the flat side of the sword to the recipient knight, usually to both shoulders. Dubbing is an essential part of the public ceremony. Such ceremonies and the many orders of knighthood date to the medieval period.
