Description
The Melbourne Safe Deposit building is part of what is known as the ANZ Gothic Bank complex and is located on Queen Street in Melbourne, Victoria. The building was designed by William Pitt (1855-1918) in 1890 for the Stock Exchange of Melbourne Co. Ltd. The elaborately decorated seven storey brick building is in the Gothic Revival style and features pointed arch windows and doorways, heraldic shields, lancet windows with tracery, numerous columns with decorated capitals, pointed finials, bas-relief sculpture, a statue of a lion holding a shield in the centre of the third floor, and two winged creatures similar to gargoyles in the centre of the fourth floor.
