Title
‘Celtic’ Cross, Longford, Tasmania
Subject
James Appleyard, Celtic, Celtic cross, Christ Church, churchyard, Longford, memorial, Tas, Tasmania.
Description
This memorial cross can be found in the churchyard of Christ Church in Longford. It is a ring-headed ‘Celtic’ style cross. The 1899 cross commemorates James Appleyard who designed the churchyard and planted its trees. Free-standing ring-headed high crosses were common in medieval Ireland, and also occur in Scotland, the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, and northern England, primarily between the 8th and 12th centuries before the style became popular again in the 19th century.
