It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings.                 <text>&lt;p&gt;While most local government councils in Australia are presided over by a mayor and councillors, Launceston City Council in Tasmania has a mayor and aldermen. This has been the case since the first election of alderman to the council in 1853, which were the first local government elections held in Van Diemen&amp;rsquo;s Land (Tasmania). Alderman comes from the Old English term ealdorman, literally &amp;lsquo;old man&amp;rsquo;. They were high ranking royal officials in charge of a shire or county and its army until the term began to be superseded by eorl (earl), probably from Old Norse jarl, from the late tenth-century. The term ealdorman appears in such Anglo-Saxon texts as Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Perhaps the most famous ealdorman was Ealdorman Byrhtnoth of Essex who lost the battle of Maldon to a Viking army in 991.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>&lt;p&gt;Longford Morris Dancers are a group of Morris Dancers who, although associated with the town of Longford, rehearse in the city of Launceston in Tasmania. The group perform the Cotswold and Borders (the border between Wales and England) versions of Morris&lt;br /&gt;dancing, and often appear at public events. Morris dancing is an English folk dance that is attested from the late fifteenth century. There are also other dances mentioned elsewhere in Europe that may have a common origin.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>&lt;p&gt;The Abbotsford Convent, located in the inner city Melbourne suburb of Abbotsford, operated as a convent, reformatory and Magdalen Asylum from 1863 until the mid-1970s. The convent was run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, a Catholic religious order who, in addition to taking standard vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, also sought to save souls. Eleven buildings of varying design stand on the 6.8 hectare site, of which the Convent building is particularly notable for the medieval French influence of its architecture. Constructed in 1900 to the design of Reed Smart and Tappin, the building is based on the gothic design of the Order&amp;rsquo;s mother house in Caen, and features steep gables, a western spire and a pebble-dash finish with contrasting red brickwork. The Convent now functions as an arts and cultural precinct.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>Maypoles and the folk dance associated with them are a popular event, often involving children, at festivals throughout Australia. The origins, and possible symbolism, of Maypole dancing are uncertain but they can be traced back at least as far as the late medieval period, with a mid-fourteenth-century Welsh poem describing a Maypole of birch. The top of the pole often has coloured ribbons attached and the dance involves the participants moving in a circle around the pole weaving in and out, thereby forming a woven pattern with the ribbons around the Maypole. The links in this entry are of early Maypole dances from all States and Territories of Australia, as well as Norfolk Island. The age of some of the photographs suggest that the tradition of Maypole dancing may have arrived with the earliest European settlers.</text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;This production by theatre company KNUTS is a modern adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;The Canterbury Tales&lt;/em&gt; in two parts. Adapted by Stephen Quinn and directed by Stephen Lee, it transposes stories from Chaucer&amp;rsquo;s original text into a variety of different genres, ranging from Western to silent film, Victorian melodrama and a Shakespearean version of a Medieval Romance. Part One includes renditions of &amp;lsquo;The Pardoner&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;, &amp;lsquo;The Miller&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;The Reeve&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;, and Part Two &amp;lsquo;The Franklin&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;, The Wife of Bath&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;The Merchant&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;. This production featured as part of the Perth Fringe Festival in 2013, where &amp;lsquo;The Canterbury Tales: Part One&amp;rsquo; was performed from 7 February to 13 February and &amp;lsquo;The Canterbury Tales: Part Two&amp;rsquo; was performed the following week from 14 February to 19 February 2013. &lt;p&gt;In Chaucer&amp;rsquo;s original &lt;em&gt;The Canterbury Tales&lt;/em&gt;, written in the late fourteenth century, the narrator joins a group of 29 pilgrims who are about to set out on a journey from Southwark to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. He proposes that each member of the group tell two stories to entertain them on their journey, and proceeds to record each of these &amp;lsquo;tales&amp;rsquo;. The teller of the best story was to be rewarded with a free meal at the expense of the rest of the group.&lt;/p&gt;</text>
