&lt;p&gt;"When fighting was almost entirely hand-to-hand, the thorough protection of the hand was necessarily of paramount importance. Armour for the head and body was, after all, but a second line of defence against the attack which penetrated the guard of the weapon. Any damage to the hand which controlled all offensive movements, as well as all parries, would place a combatant at the mercy of his antagonist. But the armourer had not only to give his attention to the protective qualities of the covering which enclosed a part so vulnerable and so likely to receive a wound, he had also to consider how he should least interfere with the use of so complicated a piece of mechanism as the human hand. It was on account of these very important considerations that one finds the gauntlet always more complicated in the details of its construction than the rest of the protective outfit.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Underneath the plate was worn a leather glove, to the fingers and thumb of which small overlapping scales were attached to complete the defence of the hand. Hourglass gauntlets are considered the zenith of medieval gauntlets. An example of this type may be seen on the brass of Sir John de Saint Quintan in Brandesburton Church, Yorkshire, which may be dated at about 1397. The famous effigy of Edward, Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince, in the cathedral church of Canterbury depicts this masterful warrior wearing this kind of hand defence."&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>This work was gifted to the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1960 by Mrs R.A. Haste. It is a line-block reproduction on paper depicting a scene from Thomas Maloryâ€™s fifteenth-century canonical Arthurian text Le Morte dâ€™Arthur. Following the battle at Barnham Down where Arthur is mortally wounded, he commands Sir Bedivere (at this point the only knight left standing) to take his sword Excalibur to the water and cast it in, and then to return and tell him what he has seen. Sir Bedivere twice takes the sword to the waterside but hides it rather than throw it to waste. Upon his return he tells Arthur that nothing unusual transpired when he threw the sword in and Arthur knows he is lying. On his third visit he casts the sword into the water, and a hand appears from the water to grab hold of it. Sir Bedivere afterwards takes Arthur to the lake, where a barge appears to take him to Avalon. The work was created by Aubrey Beardsley for a nineteenth-century illustrated edition of Le Morte dâ€™Arthur, which was issued in 12 parts between 1893 and 1984 by London publisher J.M. Dent &amp; Sons. </text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;This photograph shows Alana Bennett playing a six stringed Phoenix Standard hurdy gurdy made by Helmut Gotschy in Germany (&lt;a href="http://www.gotschy.com"&gt;www.gotschy.com&lt;/a&gt;). The hurdy gurdy is a stringed instrument played by using a crank-turned wheel. It developed from fiddles and was first used during the medieval period. The predecessor of the hurdy gurdy, the organistrum, is first mentioned in a treatise found in a manuscript written at Augsburg (Germany) in c. 1100. Alana presented a paper at the &amp;lsquo;Receptions: Medieval and Early Modern Cultural Appropriations&amp;rsquo; conference held at The University of Western Australia in August 2012 and gave an impromptu demonstration of the hurdy gurdy during a break.&lt;/p&gt;</text>

                  <text>This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed â€˜in plain viewâ€™ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australiaâ€™s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.</text>
