G. Fitzgibbon. In the cartoon Fitzgibbon is throwing a temper tantrum over the amount of money that should be allocated to the chairman (i.e. himself). The so-called &amp;lsquo;White Knight of Kerry&amp;rsquo; is depicted, as Louise D&amp;rsquo;Arcens suggests, as &amp;ldquo;a pompous undersized figure, absurd in his full suit of armour&amp;rdquo; (Louise D'Arcens,&lt;em&gt; Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910, &lt;/em&gt; Turnhout: Brepols, 2011, p.24). Additionally, Durkin&amp;rsquo;s reference to &amp;ldquo;Councillor Gibbon&amp;rdquo; implies that FitzGibbon is really plain Edmund Gibbon, and that he has &amp;lsquo;taken on airs and graces&amp;rsquo; by adding Fitz (an Anglo-Norman prefix meaning &amp;lsquo;son of&amp;rsquo;) to bolster his reputation and his claim to medieval ancestry. Fitzgibbon served in his role as chairman of the Board of Works for fourteen years until his death.                 <text>In this cartoon from The Bulletin in 1894 a serious-faced Edmund Fitzgibbon, fully-armoured and seated astride a caparisoned Kangaroo instead of a steed, charges off to give battle to an unnamed adversary. On a handy perch (a sign pointing to India), a little kookaburra laughs at his antics. In fact, Fitzgibbon is offering â€˜battleâ€™ to those who question his right to refer to himself as the White Knight of Kerry. Like other public figures of this era, Fitzgibbon was determined to add substance to his reputation and public persona through the discovery (or invention) of long-forgotten yet â€œillustrious antecedentsâ€ (Louise D'Arcens, Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910, Turnhout: Brepols, 2011, p.24). Fitzgibbon was town clerk, and later chairman of the Melbourne &amp; Metropolitan Board of Works. The determination of up-and-coming Australians to improve themselves by heaping-up honours and collecting famous ancestors was also responsible for Hopâ€™s amusing 1887 â€˜Australian Jubilee Peerageâ€™ cartoon. </text>

                <text>To describe everyday life in colonial Australia as entirely rural-based in 1900 would be misleading, for the country&amp;rsquo;s major urban centres, particularly Sydney and Melbourne, housed much of the population and fuelled its commercial vitality (see F. Brady clearly favoured the &amp;ldquo;adventuring life,&amp;rdquo; valuing rural freedom over machine-shop slavery in the noxious urban sprawl (Louise D&amp;rsquo;Arcens,&lt;em&gt; Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910&lt;/em&gt;, Turnhout, Brepols, 2011, p.141). The propensity for romanticising the Australian present by conflating it with a medieval past was not unusual at the time. The Bulletin published (and made room for) quite a lot of this type of &amp;lsquo;backblocks&amp;rsquo; versification, which &amp;ldquo;was not only determinedly populist and disposable but also extremely cursory in its medievalism, ransacking the popular imaginary indiscriminately for tropes and terms that signified instantaneously and superficially as &amp;lsquo;medieval&amp;rsquo;&amp;rdquo; (D&amp;rsquo;Arcens, 19). That much is apparent from the poem, with its comparatively stock imagery and reliance on &amp;lsquo;the bygone days of yore&amp;rsquo; for inspiration: the &amp;ldquo;Barons of Bold Adventure, Kings of the stout free lance&amp;rdquo;. Yet Brady, who was a long-standing member of the Australian Socialist League (See John B. Webb, A Critical Biography of Edwin James Brady 1869-1952, University of Sydney PhD Thesis, 1972 p.9), evidently envisaged entire communities of unburdened &amp;lsquo;emancipated&amp;rsquo; workers &amp;ldquo;roaming the countryside and working at will,&amp;rdquo; like so many questing medieval knights (D&amp;rsquo;Arcens, p.140). It is likely that Brady was appealing to the resolve that was forming and cohering as a result of the recent Federation debates (c. 1897-98) which, having filtered down into everyday exchange sought to persuade and unite the colonies under the one flag and banner.</text>

Looking out on that same geological vista (the Wollongong escarpment), it is indeed difficult to envisage Brady&amp;rsquo;s youthful knight in armour dashing stubbornly to fame and fortune at the expense of his own happiness, with anything like a straight face. However, with some deft poetic substitution and &amp;ldquo;Tennysonian&amp;rdquo; reworking on Brady&amp;rsquo;s part (D&amp;rsquo;Arcens, p.141), the Illawarra region of NSW is transformed, at least temporarily, into a mystical fairyland. As the narrator of the poem here regretfully contemplates the paths he didn&amp;rsquo;t follow, this poem serves as a poignant reminder to readers of the need to make the right decisions in life, especially those concerning love and happiness, lest they suffer the unrelenting pangs of grief and loss.</text>

It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment.                 <text>This oil on canvas painting by well-known nineteenth-century artist Edward Burne-Jones was gifted to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by Arthur Moon. It is one of seven paintings from a â€˜St George and the Dragonâ€™ narrative cycle that Burne-Jones was commissioned to produce in 1864 for the dining room of Myles Birket Fosterâ€™s house, The Hill, in Witley, Surrey. Completed in 1866, this is the sixth painting in the series. It depicts an armoured St George slaying a reptilian looking dragon, while a female figure wearing a flowing white gown and a wreath of flowers - Princess Sabra from the legend - clasps her hands and watches tentatively from the sidelines. The deadly threat posed by the dragon, and by extension the valour of the knight in quashing it, is evident from the skull and broken lance lying in the foreground of the painting. Although the legend of St George slaying the dragon is Eastern in origin, it is thought to have been taken back to England by medieval crusaders, where it was incorporated into the chivalric tradition. As the patron saint of England, a champion of Christianity, and an exemplar of chivalric masculinity, St George was a popular subject for Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Burne-Jones, and for the Victorian medieval revival more generally. </text>
