For the first time, the article informs readers, the recipients were &amp;lsquo;dubbed&amp;rsquo; by the Governor-General, Lord Gowrie, at Parliament House during a &amp;lsquo;ceremony of medieval pageantry&amp;rsquo;. The ceremony was undertaken with the permission of the King, who was traditionally the only figure with the authority to confer honours with a sword. The act of dubbing involves a light blow to the shoulders of a kneeling recipient with the flat side of a sword. Dubbing is an essential part of the public investiture ceremony and dates to the medieval period.</text>

Townsley, a lecturer in Political Science, on the outlook of Australian Universities as &amp;lsquo;still mediaeval&amp;rsquo;. Criticising lecturing on the reasoning that it turns out &amp;lsquo;poorly educated, highly technical specialists&amp;rsquo; instead of critical thinkers, Townsley negatively invokes the medieval period to explain the continued use of lecturing as the principal method of university teaching. This, he suggests, is &amp;lsquo;a hangover from medieval times when only very few people were educated&amp;rsquo;. Implied in this statement is a sense that the medieval period is &amp;lsquo;backwards&amp;rsquo; or reactionary, and that progress requires a move away from medieval ideas about, and methods of, teaching.</text>

Pinpointing Ancient Greece and the Renaissance in Europe as rare periods in history when art was appreciated not only by the rich and privileged but by a large proportion of the population, the article suggests that evidence of a growing and widespread interest in art is noticeable in art school attendance and patronage trends. As a result, &amp;lsquo;Housewives and shop-assistants, politicians and plumbers are now among those able to tell a Matisse from a Michelangelo and to live more fully because of that ability&amp;rsquo;. The article&amp;rsquo;s overall purpose is to advertise a &amp;pound;2000 Art Prize offered by &lt;em&gt;The Australian Women&amp;rsquo;s Weekly&lt;/em&gt;, so it is in the magazine&amp;rsquo;s interest to draw links between the flourishing of art in the Renaissance and the potential for contemporary interest in art to enrich society.</text>

                <text>Despite recognising that Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) was one of the most progressive anatomists of his day, this article from &lt;em&gt;The Argus&lt;/em&gt; in 1931 incorrectly labels his views as those of &amp;lsquo;medieval anatomy&amp;rsquo;. The article describes a light-hearted lecture delivered to members of the British Medical Association in which Professor Wright, one of two prestigious visitors from the Royal College of Surgeons, adopted the role of Vesalius. In this role he proceeded to outline how the internal functions of the human body were understood prior to William Harvey&amp;rsquo;s discoveries concerning the circulatory system in the seventeenth century. However this model, which consists of three spirits (animal spirit, natural spirit and vital spirit) that are transported around the body by the blood and altered by heat and various secretions, is specific to the sixteenth century rather than the medieval period. This is because bodily dissection was heavily forbidden by the Catholic Church in the medieval period, and so anatomical discussions were limited. The use of &amp;lsquo;medieval&amp;rsquo; here refers rather to an early twentieth-century attitude that the theory was primitive and reactionary within a linear narrative of medical advancement. This is evident in the explanation offered by Professor Wright that &amp;ldquo;it emphasised to a modern audience the remarkable advances which had been made in 350 years&amp;rdquo;, and &amp;ldquo;should teach the harm that could be done by adhering slavishly to conceptions which might be false&amp;rdquo;.</text>

                <text>A photograph of St Andrewâ€™s Cathedral in Sydney that most likely dates from between 1920 and 1925. St Andrewâ€™s Cathedral is located on George Street in Sydney and is part of the Town Hall group of buildings. It is the oldest cathedral in Australia. Construction of the cathedral was completed in 1868, and it was consecrated by the second Bishop of Sydney, Frederick Barker, on St Andrewâ€™s day (30 November) that year. St Andrewâ€™s Cathedral is built in a Gothic Perpendicular style according to the design of well-known gothic revival architect Edmund T. Blacket. Blacket replaced James Hume as the architect of the cathedral, and had to adapt his plans to conform to the shape and size of foundations that were already in place. The photograph exhibits some of the cathedralâ€™s many decorative pinnacles and traceried gothic windows. One of its two distinctive towers, believed to have been modelled on the fifteenth-century towers of York Minster Cathedral, is also visible in the background. </text>

It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. The author compares them to medieval mummers.The anonymous author also explains that on commem day students put on the cap and bells of jesters. Jesters were pranksters and jokers often employed to provide entertainment, whilst mummers perform in comic 'mummers' plays'. Both of these traditions date back to the medieval period.</text>
