<p>This photograph of a sign was taken at the rear of the Cascade Brewery. The sign features a warrior on horseback killing a dragon with a lance. The similarity of the sign to the original St George logo used by the Launceston brewery Boag’s, which was purchased by Cascade Brewery in 1922, suggests that this may also be an image of the warrior saint popular during the medieval period.</p>

<p>‘Viking ship spotted off remote NT island’ appeared on the online version of ABC News on September 18, 2012. The replica Viking ship was seen off the coast of Elcho<br />Island in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. The ship was sailed by a crew of six Russians from Europe and was heading for a museum in Sydney. The Viking longship<br />is often referred to as a dragon ship due to the carved figure-head on the bow, as seen in the photograph of the replica by Tim Wethers.</p>

This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

An account of the resource
<p>The West Tamar Presbyterian Church, commonly referred to as the Auld Kirk (Scots for old church), is located on the banks of the Tamar River in the small Tasmanian town of Sidmouth. Construction of the church began in 1843 with the support of the first Presbyterian minister in the area, Reverend Alexander McKenzie, and James Reid. McKenzie’s replacement, Reverend James Garrett, became the first minister to take a service in the church in 1846. The church was built of stone rubble by convict and free labour and it is in the Gothic Revival style. It features lancet windows and a pointed arched entrance. The church was badly damaged by fire in 1900 and was not restored until 1913, which is when the present brick bellcote may have been added. 'Kirk' itself is a medieval word and meant 'church' in Old Norse. It was introduced to Scotland by Viking settlers. </p>

The 1.5 minute news broadcast is available on the website. Both stories report on a medieval festival held in the Tasmanian town of Wynyard on the weekend of September 15 and 16, 2012. The festival featured jousting competitions and open combat sword-fighting, with contestants wearing armour. 'It is the first time that open combat swordsmanship and jousting competitions have been held in Tasmania.' </p>

An account of the resource
Consecrated and renamed St James Anglican Church in 1926, this building is in Franklin Village, Tasmania, was originally known as Franklin Village Chapel and is on what used to be the main road between Hobart and Launceston. The rendered brick chapel was opened in 1845 by Tasmania’s first bishop, Francis Nixon, and it operated as a school from 1847. The modest building is in the Gothic Revival style and features a bellcote and pointed-arch windows. Franklin Village is now virtually an outer suburb of Launceston.
