                <text>Weighing in on a wider printed debate about the cost and value of university teaching, the author of this article takes issue with the prevailing focus on lectures as the principal delivery mode for teaching in universities. He associates the development of lecturing with the medieval origins of universities and the need to disseminate knowledge before the invention of print. Following â€˜the book ageâ€™, however, the author suggests that lectures are redundant and superfluous. Rather than guiding students in their wider learning as intended, he argues, lectures have the opposite effect in that students regarded them as an adequate alternative to reading. In an age where books are accessible and the ability to read almost universal, he recommends that the teaching of subjects such as English, History, Economics and Philosophy should instead be based on independent student reading followed by class discussion. This would also have the effect of allowing professors more time to conduct research instead of preparing lectures. â€œIn the tenacity with which they [universities] still adhere to the propagation of knowledge by lecturesâ€, the author chides, â€œthere is something peculiarly medievalâ€.</text>

                <text>A black and white photograph of St John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Fremantle taken by renowned WA photographer Izzy Orloff in the 1920s. St John the Evangelist is a neo-gothic Church located in the centre of Fremantle. It was designed by W. Smith and constructed from limestone by J. J. Harwood and Son. The church was consecrated in 1882 and an older church that had served the Anglican congregation in Fremantle since 1843 was demolished. A number of the churchâ€™s gothic features are visible in the photograph, including its rose window, steep gable, entry porch, lancet windows and stone buttresses. A bell turret was added to the church in c.1906 and is also just visible above the trees.</text>

                <text>A woman demonstrating the art of passementerie at the Perth Medieval Fayre. This practice evolved from braiding and was used to make narrow trimmings and decorations for finishing clothing, altarpieces, and furnishings. It was also one of two methods used to handcraft lace (called â€˜bobbinâ€™, â€˜boneâ€™ or â€˜pillowâ€™ lace). A pattern is marked out on the parchment with pins, and each separate thread is wound onto a bobbin. The threads are then passed over and interlaced with each other to form the pattern.&#13;

The Perth Medieval Fayre is organised and run by the Western Australian Medieval Alliance. In 2011 it was held at Supreme Court Gardens on 19 March. Enthusiasts and vendors showcased a range of medieval arts and crafts, from dancing, calligraphy and lace-making to demonstrations of the techniques, weaponry and apparel of medieval combat.</text>

                <text>In this article, a summary is provided of the Archbishop of Sydneyâ€™s response to a memorial regarding the controversial debate over the wearing of vestments by Anglican clergy. According to Dr Wright, the article reports, the use of vestments was deliberately discarded by the Anglican Church at the reformation along with other aspects of medieval theology, and the â€œrevivalâ€ of vestments equated to â€œa deliberate reintroduction of medieval usageâ€. He therefore would not sanction the use of vestments until the canon law was altered to make the practice legal.&#13;

John Charles Wright was appointed Archbishop of Sydney in 1909. He was known for his adherence to laws of the Church, and for his insistence that his role was to administer the existing laws, not devise new ones. He was particularly opposed to the use of the chasuble by Anglican clergy, and made clergy within his diocese agree not to wear them. See Stephen E. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.</text>

This style is characterised by the shape of the stone tracery inside the enclosing arch. Above the lancet windows are also small circular openings containing quatrefoil patterns. Located in Kingâ€™s Square in the centre of Fremantle, St John the Evangelist Anglican Church is a neo-gothic building constructed from limestone. It was designed by W. Smith and constructed by J. J. Harwood and Son. The foundation stone was laid in 1878 and the building was consecrated in 1882. The church replaced an older building that had served the Anglican congregation in Fremantle since 1843.&#13;
