The building, opened in 1897 and designed by William Atkins, was originally the Perth Boys’ and Girls’ School, and was often referred to as Perth Central School. The central red brick tower with a pitched corrugated roof and arched upper windows is in the Romanesque style. A medieval example of this style of tower, but with fewer arched windows, was found at the front of Cluny Abbey III in France, built in 1088.
