In this Collection you will find items relating to medievalism in public contexts and popular culture, and the revisitation or reenactment of the Middle Ages by groups such as the Society for Creative Anachronism.

An account of the resource
<p>‘Tasmanian Gothic’ was an episode of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Compass television programme presented by Geraldine Doogue. The story was researched by Wendy Boynton and aired on June 24, 2012 to celebrate the 200<sup>th</sup> anniversary of the birth of English architect and designer Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852), one of the main instigators of the Gothic Revival. Although he never visited Australia some consider the best examples of Pugin’s work to be in Tasmania, in part due to their preservation. When his friend Robert William Willson (1794-1866) was chosen as Tasmania’s first Catholic Bishop, Pugin provided him with the materials necessary to establish his diocese. These items, including scale models for three churches, were taken by Willson by ship from England to Hobart in 1844. Pugin artefacts in Tasmania include alter cloths, baptismal fonts, chalice linens, crosses, rood screens, headstones, vestments, and a monstrance (a vessel to hold the communion host, first used in the medieval period), the churches at Oatlands and Colebrook, and elements of the church at Richmond. The programme also deals with Pugin’s lasting legacy, including the enduring notion that Gothic style architecture is the most appropriate for ecclesiastical architecture. </p>

It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

St Hubert’s vineyard in Coldstream, Victoria, was founded by Hubert de Castella in 1862. It is named after St Hubert, the ‘Apostle of Ardennes’ and patron saint of hunters. Born c.656, Hubert was the eldest son of Bertrand, Duke of Aquitaine. He was a prominent member at the Court of Neustria in his youth and later (after fleeing to the Eastern Frankish territories) at Pepin of Heristal’s Court in Austrasia. He is believed to have increasingly prioritised hunting over religious observance, which culminated sometime soon after his marriage (682) in a vision of a stag carrying a shining cross between his antlers. The stag told him to transform his ways or he would go to hell. Henceforth, he distributed his wealth amongst the poor, renounced his dukedom, was ordained as a priest, founded a number of monasteries and engaged in missionary work until his death in c.727. In homage to this legend, the St Hubert’s Vineyard emblem features a stag and a cross.

<p>An image of the ‘Saint George’ stained glass window at St Alban’s Anglican Church, Highgate. This stained glass is one of three windows (the others depicting St Alban and St Michael) located at the rear of the church. It was originally purchased for St George’s Cathedral but was later discovered to be the wrong shape (rounded instead of pointed) and was donated to St Alban’s. The stained glass depicts George standing astride a vanquished winged-dragon. As is common in artistic renditions, George’s role as a warrior saint is symbolised by a suit of elaborate armour, a sword and a shield. His spear, which pierces the dragon, is also a processional cross and has a pennant with a cross flying from it.</p>
<p>About St Alban’s:</p>
<p>St Alban’s is a small limestone parish church located in Highgate, Western Australia. Built in 1889 (with enlargements in 1898) in a Victorian Romanesque style, it is one of the earliest buildings designed by well-known WA architect Sir J. J. Talbot-Hobbs (1864-1938). Its characteristically romanesque features include the semi-circular arches, the traditional load-bearing masonry of the buttresses and solid walling, and the small window and door openings in relation to the overall wall area. The St Alban’s church Hall was used briefly as a preparatory school by The Sisters of the Church of England between 1907 and 1915. This photograph shows a sculptural relief that one passes at the climb the steps to the entrance to St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney. The sculpture includes images from medieval Ireland juxtaposed with the Australian coat of arms featuring a kangaroo and emu. The medieval Irish items are a harp, round tower, and a ring-headed cross. The cross is miniature version of the ninth-century high cross, the Cross of the Scriptures, which can be found at Clonmacnoise monastery in County Offaly, Ireland.

Image of the colourful mosaic in the centre of a Great War Memorial Cross situated in the grounds of St Peter’s Cathedral in Adelaide, South Australia. The mosaic depicts a warrior armed with a shield and a lance, and draws on a number of different symbolic references to represent WWI soldiers as courageous, brave and righteous fighters. The tunic and the armour look classical, but the lance, the shield and the halo are distinctively medieval. The shield bearing the St George cross is reminiscent of those carried by knights during the Crusades, while the lance, an instrument used by jousting knights in the High Middle Ages, suggests gallantry, chivalry and honour. The halo encircling the figure’s head is a common iconographic motif in medieval depictions of saints, and the white cloak has likely also been added to symbolise virtue and righteousness.

An account of the resource
An image of the Sisters of Mercy convent located next to St. Patrick's Convent School on South Street in York, Western Australia.
It was built in 1868 and was originally used as a presbytery by Father Patrick Gibney before the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy in York in 1872. The building embodies features that are typically characteristic of the Gothic Revival style of architecture, which was popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and other British colonies in the nineteenth century. As an architectural style, it is based on the close examination of medieval structures, and a concern with 'authenticity' of design. This style is often seen to be symbolic of conservative qualities such as, continuity, stability, religious authority and tradition. The lancet windows of this building and its vaulted ceiling are particular features which are in keeping with this style.

This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

An account of the resource
An image of St. Patrick's Convent School located on South Street in York, a town ninety minutes south east of Perth in Western Australia.
The school was built in 1873 by Father Patrick Gibney for the Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy taught children of all ages, as well as music, reading and writing for young adults. When they left York, it was converted into one of the oldest libraries in WA. This building embodies features that are typically characteristic of the Gothic Revival style of architecture, which was popular in the United Kingdom, Australia and other British colonies in the nineteenth century. As an architectural style, it is based on the close examination of medieval structures, and a concern with 'authenticity' of design. This style is often symbolic of conservative qualities such as, continuity, stability, religious authority and tradition.
At present, the building is privately owned and opens as an Antique shop on weekends.
