Description
An account of the resource
This is one of several ‘battle’ images from the NEMAS Easter Gathering in Armidale, NSW, in 2008. A number of medieval re-creation enthusiasts are engaged in close combat. They are armed with swords and what look to be mostly kite shields, and wear an assortment of different early medieval helmet styles. These include Norman style helmets with nasal bars and kettle hats.
The Gathering is a biannual assembly of re-enactment societies from Australasia traditionally hosted by the New England Medieval Arts Society Inc (or NEMAS). At these gatherings, members aim to recreate medieval arts and craft such as woodworking, blacksmithing, tanning, spinning and weaving, as well as arms and armour construction. The photo gallery depicts scenes of daily life: market stalls, people sitting around campfires, even a King and his attendants, as well as recreated battles.

Description
An account of the resource
A photograph of two helmets and two swords in the blacksmith’s workshop at the Balingup Medieval Carnivale. The helmets are based on designs known from excavations of migration age sites. In particular, the helmet in the foreground is similar to those of Vendal era Sweden, whilst the other is reminiscent of the helmet from the ship burial at Sutton Hoo in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of East Anglia, England. Both of the helmets and swords display excellent workmanship.

Description
An account of the resource

A photograph of a shield and axe in the blacksmith’s workshop at the Balingup Medieval Carnivale. The shield is reminiscent of one found in the river Thames at Battersea, London. The shield is from pre-Roman Britain and is one of the best examples of British, or Celtic, art. Its appearance at a medieval carnival is perhaps an example of how almost anything from the pre-Modern era is part of an imagined medieval past. The original can be seen in the British Museum.

For information on the original shield see http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights/highlight_objects/pe_prb/t/the_battersea_shield.aspx
