It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas.                 <text>This article from the Western Argus provides details of two clocks that were to be installed in London Court. After noting the accuracy of the clocks, which were designed to lose no more than a thousandth of a second per hour, the author provides a description of the mechanised features that would accompany them. One would (and does) show â€œSt George unmounted and brandishing a stainless steel sword chasing a dragon around a circuit each quarter of an hourâ€ and beheading him on the hour, while the other would show four knights jousting. London Court is otherwise described by the author as a â€œmedieval monstrosityâ€, standing in stark contrast to the modern architecture of the surrounding area.&#13;

London Court is a retail shopping arcade that runs between St Georgeâ€™s Terrace and Hay Street in the centre of Perth. Completed in 1937, the building was commissioned by WA entrepreneur Claude de Bernales and designed by Melbourne based architect Bernard Evans. London Court is distinctive for its Inter-War Old English style of architecture.</text>

                <text>In this article from The West Australian in 1937, the arrival of two clocks destined for London Court in Perth, Western Australia is announced. They were delivered to Fremantle by Mr H. Hope-Jones, managing director and founder of the Synchronome Company in London, during his world tour of observatory clocks. The article goes on to summarise Hope-Jonesâ€™ description of the clocks: the clock at the St Georgeâ€™s Terrace entrance would have a dial copied from the famous medieval (fourteenth century) Big Clock at Rouen and the clock at the Hay Street entrance would be a replica of Big Ben in London. Above the clock at the St Georgeâ€™s end, Hope-Jones explained, would be the figures of St George and the dragon on a revolving horizontal wheel. The wheel would revolve once at every quarter past the hour, twice at every half hour, three times at every three-quarters past the hour and at the chiming of the full hour St Georgeâ€™s sword would touch a hidden trigger switch and the dragonâ€™s head would fall off. Above the Hay Street clock would be four jousting knights, who would occasionally dismount each other with a blow from their lance. This, Hope-Jones said, was a copy of the fourteenth-century Wells Cathedral Clock reputed to have been made by Peter Lightfoot, the Monk of Glastonbury. </text>

                <text>This staircase â€˜Seasonsâ€™ window at Mandeville Hall in Toorak was designed by David Relph Drape and created by Ferguson &amp; Urie for the original owner, millionaire Joseph Clarke, in 1877. The circular medallions in the centre of the window depict scenes of the four different seasons, beginning with winter. The idyllic country scenes that fill the main medallions are of typically English views, and doubtless served, as Beverley Sherry suggests, as â€œpersuasive [and â€˜nostalgicâ€™] reminders of â€˜homeâ€™â€ (Australiaâ€™s Historic Stained Glass, Sydney, Murray Child, 1991, p.39). The figures to the left and right of the medallions also represent the four seasons, and feature banners identifying which season they represent. Clarkeâ€™s initials appear on the central lower border flanked by curved floral motifs that were probably adapted from classical Roman frieze work. There is also a star-studded cross of St George at each of the corners. In this way, classical Rome, medievalism, and British imperialism appear as natural offshoots of the other. This decorative and largely opaque window is intricately patterned with entwined foliage, and dominated by figural seasonal vignettes. It is crowned by a semi-circular top light (another concession to the architectural â€˜Romanesqueâ€™ or Norman style) containing a reclining Diana, and Cupid holding a bow. </text>

                <text>This elaborate staircase window in a converted St Kilda mansion is probably by Ferguson &amp; Urie and dated c.1884. The window depicts a red-cloaked and fully armoured St George standing on the head of a dragon. Images of St George and the Dragon were popular in the nineteenth century, with this appeal being especially aided by Sir Walter Scottâ€™s reawakening of popular notions of chivalry in his writings. The outer border contains red and white Tudor roses interspersed with green leaves on a blue ground, while the solid looking pillars hold small medallion-shaped imprints of the Union Jack. Overall, the window represents a calm â€˜manlyâ€™ Victorian assurance in the face of determined opposition. Such a window can be interpreted as â€œan expansive declaration of the values and â€¦ institutions inherited from Britainâ€ (Beverley Sherry, Australiaâ€™s Historic Stained Glass, Sydney, Murray Child, 1991, p.44). Although little information is available regarding the mansionâ€™s original owner, it is thought that the house was built for someone engaged in local politics. Thus, St George killing the dragon makes an ideal theme for a grand staircase window in a house where integrity and propriety must be readily observable.</text>

                <text>Completed in 1854 and consecrated in 1858, the Holy Trinity Church in York, Western Australia possesses features which are characteristic of the Victorian Romanesque, Carpenter Gothic and Gothic Revival architectural styles. Throughout the nineteenth century in the United Kingdom, Australia and America, the Gothic manifested itself in a variety of architectural forms. Based on, yet distinct from, British nineteenth-century medievalism, Australian medievalist buildings appropriated elements of medievalist design in ways which suited the Australian climate, materials and unique colonial settings. &#13;

The most obvious evocation of the medieval in the design of the Holy Trinity Church in York is the castle turret and its many lancet windows. The simplicity of the church's design (both structurally and aesthetically) is also typical of the Carpenter Gothic style, known for its pointed arches, towers and steep gables, as well as light-frame construction.  </text>

                  <text>This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed â€˜in plain viewâ€™ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australiaâ€™s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings.                 <text>This oil on canvas painting by well-known nineteenth-century artist Edward Burne-Jones was gifted to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by Arthur Moon. It is one of seven paintings from a â€˜St George and the Dragonâ€™ narrative cycle that Burne-Jones was commissioned to produce in 1864 for the dining room of Myles Birket Fosterâ€™s house, The Hill, in Witley, Surrey. Completed in 1866, this is the sixth painting in the series. It depicts an armoured St George slaying a reptilian looking dragon, while a female figure wearing a flowing white gown and a wreath of flowers - Princess Sabra from the legend - clasps her hands and watches tentatively from the sidelines. The deadly threat posed by the dragon, and by extension the valour of the knight in quashing it, is evident from the skull and broken lance lying in the foreground of the painting. Although the legend of St George slaying the dragon is Eastern in origin, it is thought to have been taken back to England by medieval crusaders, where it was incorporated into the chivalric tradition. As the patron saint of England, a champion of Christianity, and an exemplar of chivalric masculinity, St George was a popular subject for Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Burne-Jones, and for the Victorian medieval revival more generally. </text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;The Launceston, Tasmania, brewing company James Boag has a &amp;lsquo;St George&amp;rsquo; beer. The bottle&amp;rsquo;s label features St George on a horse and carrying a sword trampling a dragon underfoot. This was one of the original logos of the brewery and has been used since 1883. The Boag&amp;rsquo;s website states that St George symbolises &amp;lsquo;strength, honour and courage&amp;rsquo;. Although the mounted figure depicts a more historic St George, who was a Roman soldier, than most other images, the tale of St George fighting a dragon is thought to have been brought to Western Europe by crusaders returning from the Holy Lands in the eleventh century.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
