The masterclass followed directly after the International Medievalism and Popular Culture Symposium. The symposium was attended primarily by undergraduate and postgraduate students, and was led by Clare Bradford, Stephen Knight, and Chantal Bourgault du Coudray. Topics discussed included children’s literature, picture books, gaming, young adult fiction, and film and television.

An invitation to postgraduate students and early career researchers to attend the ARC Masterclass ‘Medievalism and Youth Culture’. The Masterclass is to be held at The University of Western Australia on December 6, 2011, and is led by Clare Bradford and feature contributions from Stephen Knight and Chantal Bourgault du Coudray. It takes place directly after the ARC Symposium ‘International Medievalism and Popular Culture’. Topics covered include electronic Robin Hood, children’s literature and culture, comedic depictions of the Medieval period, medievalist monsters, and the gender dynamics of medievalism.

A digital photograph of popular Viking items in a display case at the State Library of Western Australia. The display advertises a book signing session by Norman Jorgensen for his 2011 children’s book The Last Viking, illustrated by James Foley. The case includes a full size (unhistorical) horned helmet and leather belt featuring a ship on its silver buckle, as well as a statuette of a Viking warrior. The book is displayed behind the helmet. An anonymous short story on page 47 of the Brisbane newspaper The Queenslander in the ‘Children’s Playground’ section on 24 May, 1934. ‘The Viking’s Adventure’ is about a school trip to the beach and the adventure of a boys toy ship called ‘The Viking’ which is sailed there.

A blog for the children’s picture book ‘The Last Viking’ by Australian authors Norman Jorgensen and James Foley (illustrator) published by the Western Australian publisher Fremantle Press. The story is about a boy who connects with his inner Viking to help him outwit bullies. The blog includes educational children’s activities (how to read runes, rune puzzles, colouring in), historical information (for example on William the Conqueror), and a section for teachers outlining how the book fits into the school curriculum, its themes, book design, and instructions on how students should post comments to the blog.

The children’s picture book ‘The Last Viking’ by Australian authors Norman Jorgensen and James Foley (illustrator) published by the Western Australian publisher Fremantle Press. The story is about a boy who connects with his inner Viking to help him outwit bullies. The Vikings were warriors from Scandinavia in the period c. 790-1100 who were renowned for their bravery and ferocity.
