                <text>This detailed action photograph of two knights jousting was taken at the Blacktown Medieval Fayre by Richard Taylor in 2011. Considerable attention to detail is evidenced by quality gear and trappings. Note the blunt headed lance and knightly accoutrements. The combatants shown here are members of Full Tilt, â€œa world renowned quality jousting outfit,â€ that could have been extracted from the pages of a novel by Sir Walter Scott. The knights in this photograph wear plate armour, which fits with the rising popularity of jousting tournaments in the fifteenth century. By this time plate armour had largely replaced chain mail as the protective garment of choice for knights. The black colouring of the armour adds to the theatricality of the event.&#13;

The Blacktown Medieval Fayre is billed as â€œa world of medieval magic,â€ and is part of the annual Blacktown Fiesta, an eight day extravaganza hosted by Blacktown City Council. It is just one of several interesting medieval events held throughout the country at different times of the year.&#13;

The article reports on a medieval &amp;lsquo;Celtic&amp;rsquo;-style wedding of two members of the Society of Creative Anachronism. The Hobart couple were married at Port Arthur wearing specially made medieval costumes and brandishing a sword each. The also wore torcs, or neck-rings, an item occasionally found in the medieval period but more common earlier. Many of the guests also wore medieval costumes.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>&lt;p&gt;This production by theatre company KNUTS is a modern adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;The Canterbury Tales&lt;/em&gt; in two parts. Adapted by Stephen Quinn and directed by Stephen Lee, it transposes stories from Chaucer&amp;rsquo;s original text into a variety of different genres, ranging from Western to silent film, Victorian melodrama and a Shakespearean version of a Medieval Romance. Part One includes renditions of &amp;lsquo;The Pardoner&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;, &amp;lsquo;The Miller&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;The Reeve&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;, and Part Two &amp;lsquo;The Franklin&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;, The Wife of Bath&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo; and &amp;lsquo;The Merchant&amp;rsquo;s Tale&amp;rsquo;. This production featured as part of the Perth Fringe Festival in 2013, where &amp;lsquo;The Canterbury Tales: Part One&amp;rsquo; was performed from 7 February to 13 February and &amp;lsquo;The Canterbury Tales: Part Two&amp;rsquo; was performed the following week from 14 February to 19 February 2013. &lt;p&gt;In Chaucer&amp;rsquo;s original &lt;em&gt;The Canterbury Tales&lt;/em&gt;, written in the late fourteenth century, the narrator joins a group of 29 pilgrims who are about to set out on a journey from Southwark to Canterbury to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. He proposes that each member of the group tell two stories to entertain them on their journey, and proceeds to record each of these &amp;lsquo;tales&amp;rsquo;. The teller of the best story was to be rewarded with a free meal at the expense of the rest of the group.&lt;/p&gt;</text>

The name evokes the legends of the Quest for the Holy Grail, and this medieval association is enhanced by the illustrations on the bottle labels. The label features a chalice, or goblet/footed cup, surrounded by a floral design. A chalice is often depicted as the vessel of the Holy Grail, although during the medieval period it was also sometimes depicted as a platter. The Quest for the Holy Grail was a popular part of the legendary Arthurian cycle involving Lancelot and/or Galahad during the medieval period, particularly in the work of Chr&amp;eacute;tien de Troyes and Wolfram von Eschenbach. Now, however, the Quest is often more readily associated with the Knights Templar, for example in the 1989 film &lt;em&gt;Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade&lt;/em&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>This oil on canvas painting by well-known nineteenth-century artist Edward Burne-Jones was gifted to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by Arthur Moon. It is one of seven paintings from a â€˜St George and the Dragonâ€™ narrative cycle that Burne-Jones was commissioned to produce in 1864 for the dining room of Myles Birket Fosterâ€™s house, The Hill, in Witley, Surrey. Completed in 1866, this is the sixth painting in the series. It depicts an armoured St George slaying a reptilian looking dragon, while a female figure wearing a flowing white gown and a wreath of flowers - Princess Sabra from the legend - clasps her hands and watches tentatively from the sidelines. The deadly threat posed by the dragon, and by extension the valour of the knight in quashing it, is evident from the skull and broken lance lying in the foreground of the painting. Although the legend of St George slaying the dragon is Eastern in origin, it is thought to have been taken back to England by medieval crusaders, where it was incorporated into the chivalric tradition. As the patron saint of England, a champion of Christianity, and an exemplar of chivalric masculinity, St George was a popular subject for Pre-Raphaelite artists such as Burne-Jones, and for the Victorian medieval revival more generally. </text>

                  <text>This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed â€˜in plain viewâ€™ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australiaâ€™s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions.                 <text>This photographic artwork by Australian artist Fiona Hall was purchased by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1984. In the photograph Hall has reconstructed her own version of the scene from medieval Dutch painter Jan van Eyckâ€™s famous 1434 oil painting, â€œThe Arnolfini Portraitâ€, by transposing the figures into a modern setting and replacing their faces. At the bottom of the frame is an insert of the original painting by Jan van Eyck. The figures in van Eyckâ€™s painting are believed to be those of Gionvanni di Nicolao Arnolfini, a fifteenth-century Italian merchant living in the Flemish town of Bruges, and his wife. </text>

                <text>This is one of a series of pre-action photographs taken by photographer Richard Taylor at Nurragingy Reserve in 2011. It shows an â€˜old warriorâ€™ displaying steely determination to survive a potentially dangerous encounter. The subject of the photograph is a participant at the Blacktown Medieval Fayre. He wears a chainmail hood (a coif) and shirt (hauberk or haubergeon), and a Norman style helmet. Chain mail was used extensively in the middle ages to fashion protective garments by interlocking thousands of metal rings to form a meshed material. Chainmail garments were worn by medieval knights and soldiers as body armour until chainmail was gradually superseded by plate armour in the fourteenth century.   &#13;
The Blacktown Medieval Fayre is billed as â€œa world of medieval magic,â€ and is part of the annual Blacktown Fiesta, an eight day extravaganza hosted by Blacktown City Council. It is just one of several interesting medieval events held throughout the country at different times of the year.</text>
