                <text>This door is in the chancel of St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in the small Tasmanian town of Bothwell. The church was built in the Gothic Revival style from 1887 and consecrated in 1891. It was designed by Launceston architect Alexander North (1858-1945) and built of local stone by Lewis and son and Hallet, primarily by the stonemason Thomas Lewis. Although the actual door only has a small rounded arch, the stonework, in particular the molding, gives the impression of the Gothic style with the creation of a pointed arch above the doorway.</text>

The window is made up of three lancet windows with a figure in each. The figure in the tall central window is a knight in late medieval armour and helmet holding a spear and shield. Above the knight is a ring-headed (Celtic) cross, a style common in Ireland, Scotland, the Isle of Man, Wales, and England from c. 750-1200. Below the each of the figures are two heraldic shields.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>&lt;p&gt;The Order of St Thomas of Acre was re-established in 2005 and is dedicated to both St Thomas of Acre and St Thomas of Canterbury. The original Hospitaller&amp;rsquo;s of St Thomas of Canterbury at Acre were founded by King Richard I (the Lionheart) of England (1157-1199) in Acre in 1190 while he was on the third crusade. They were later re-organised into a military order during the fifth crusade. It is usually referred to as the Knights of St Thomas. Membership was restricted to Englishmen. The Knights of St Thomas were dissolved by Henry VIII (1491-1547) in 1538. The current Order has adopted the habit of the original &amp;ndash; a white mantle with a red cross with a scallop shell at its centre. The Order of St Thomas of Acre are an &amp;lsquo;ecumenical society concerned with fostering of the values of traditional chivalry&amp;rsquo;, and their website includes a &amp;lsquo;Chivalric Code&amp;rsquo;. The inclusion on the website of a section on the stained glass windows at St Thomas&amp;rsquo; Anglican Church in the Victorian town of Werribee suggests that someone from the town leads the order.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;St Thomas of Canterbury (Thomas Becket) (1118-1170) was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury by Henry II (1133-1189) of England, father of Richard I. After a series of disputes with Henry he was martyred in Canterbury Cathedral by the king&amp;rsquo;s followers.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>This stone piscina is in St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in the small Tasmanian town of Bothwell. The church was built in the Gothic Revival style from 1887 and consecrated in 1891. It was designed by Launceston architect Alexander North (1858-1945) and built of local stone by Lewis and son and Hallet, primarily by the stonemason Thomas Lewis. Lewis was presumably responsible for the piscina (the shallow basin, used for washing communion vessels) with a recessed double niche and column. The stonework is in the Gothic style with prominent pointed arches.</text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;This large stained glass window featuring three figures from the Old Testament is on the northern wall of St David&amp;rsquo;s Anglican Cathedral, Hobart. It was created by the firm Burlison and Grylls and installed in the Cathedral in 1872. Each of the three figures &amp;ndash; Joshua, Moses, and Gideon, occupy a lancet window. While Moses is attired in a robe, Gideon wears armour and a hat of the Renaissance period, and carries a spear. Joshua, who led the Israelites on their conquest of Canaan following the death of Moses, is dressed as a medieval knight. He wears full plate armour of the late medieval period and a sword at his side, and carries a lance. His helmet is at his feet. All three figures are standing above a representation of a castle/fortress with three round towers topped by a crenelated parapet, and Gothic-style spires. Below the castles are heraldic shields.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>&lt;p&gt;While most local government councils in Australia are presided over by a mayor and councillors, Launceston City Council in Tasmania has a mayor and aldermen. This has been the case since the first election of alderman to the council in 1853, which were the first local government elections held in Van Diemen&amp;rsquo;s Land (Tasmania). Alderman comes from the Old English term ealdorman, literally &amp;lsquo;old man&amp;rsquo;. They were high ranking royal officials in charge of a shire or county and its army until the term began to be superseded by eorl (earl), probably from Old Norse jarl, from the late tenth-century. The term ealdorman appears in such Anglo-Saxon texts as Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Perhaps the most famous ealdorman was Ealdorman Byrhtnoth of Essex who lost the battle of Maldon to a Viking army in 991.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings.                 <text>Bothwell (Tasmania) Town Hall was built in 1902. The building also served as the towns Police Station and Court Room. It is now used as the local library. The stone building features three semi-circular arches supported by columns with decorated capitals. The arches are in the Romanesque style, whilst the foliage decoration on the capitals is also commonly found in medieval Romanesque (and Gothic) architecture. </text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;The Mary Ann Simpson (1857-1915) memorial stained glass window is in St David&amp;rsquo;s Anglican Cathedral, Hobart. The lancet window features St Michael as a knight wearing armour of the late medieval period and wearing a sword. He is killing a red dragon which lies at his feet with a spear. St Michael and the dragon are coming out of a representation of what appears to be a niche of delicate stonework in Gothic style with pointed arches.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
