                <text>&lt;p&gt;This article from &amp;lsquo;Psychic Australia&amp;rsquo; in March 1977 by Rex Gilroy claims that Norse/Scandinavian sailors visited the South Pacific and northern Australia. The article, &amp;lsquo;Vikings Visited Cairns&amp;rsquo;&amp;rsquo;, is now freely available online on the Mysterious Australia website. The article includes various arguments for a Norse presence in the south Pacific, including swastika symbols found in rock and wood art in Java, Cambodia, Malaya, and Vietnam, the shape of war canoes in Fiji, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and Tonga, and the physical appearance of some of the native inhabitants of New Guinea. Similar arguments are then applied to northern Australia, augmented by a comparison between northern-Australian Aboriginal religious beliefs and those of the Norse, such as the existence of a rainbow bridge (Bifr&amp;ouml;st in Old Norse texts) in both cultures, and spirits, or Valkyries, carrying off the dead after a battle. Gilroy also considers rock art near Cairns, Queensland, to show warriors dressed as Vikings in horned helmets. The author&amp;rsquo;s belief that Vikings wore horned and winged helmets, both of which became popularly associated with Vikings through the costumes used in Richard Wagner&amp;rsquo;s (1813-1883) Ring Cycle operas (although there is evidence for the ceremonial use of horned helmets in pre-Viking age Scandinavia), and the confusion in calling Wotan/O&amp;eth;in/Odin the thunder god instead of &amp;THORN;orr/Thor, allows for little confidence in the assertions of the article.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>Despite recognising that Flemish physician Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) was one of the most progressive anatomists of his day, this article from &lt;em&gt;The Argus&lt;/em&gt; in 1931 incorrectly labels his views as those of &amp;lsquo;medieval anatomy&amp;rsquo;. The article describes a light-hearted lecture delivered to members of the British Medical Association in which Professor Wright, one of two prestigious visitors from the Royal College of Surgeons, adopted the role of Vesalius. In this role he proceeded to outline how the internal functions of the human body were understood prior to William Harvey&amp;rsquo;s discoveries concerning the circulatory system in the seventeenth century. However this model, which consists of three spirits (animal spirit, natural spirit and vital spirit) that are transported around the body by the blood and altered by heat and various secretions, is specific to the sixteenth century rather than the medieval period. This is because bodily dissection was heavily forbidden by the Catholic Church in the medieval period, and so anatomical discussions were limited. The use of &amp;lsquo;medieval&amp;rsquo; here refers rather to an early twentieth-century attitude that the theory was primitive and reactionary within a linear narrative of medical advancement. This is evident in the explanation offered by Professor Wright that &amp;ldquo;it emphasised to a modern audience the remarkable advances which had been made in 350 years&amp;rdquo;, and &amp;ldquo;should teach the harm that could be done by adhering slavishly to conceptions which might be false&amp;rdquo;.</text>

                <text>This article from &lt;em&gt;The Register&lt;/em&gt; in 1915 traces the origins of Mothers&amp;rsquo; Day celebrations to the medieval period, when adolescent children would be afforded a holiday from work on the fourth Sunday in Lent to &amp;lsquo;go a-mothering&amp;rsquo;. On such occasions, the article explains, family members would assemble and pay homage to mothers by presenting gifts, and a general air of festivity ensued with special Church services and prayers containing more than usual reference to family life. While some elements of the festivities were not adopted in Australia, the article continues, the observance of mothers day is regularly marked by the wearing of white flowers, and by annual festivals such as the one conducted at the Young Women&amp;rsquo;s Christian Association headquarters in Adelaide.</text>

                <text>This article from &lt;em&gt;The Argus&lt;/em&gt; in 1930 reports on the return to Melbourne of famed Australian mosaic and stained glass artist Mervyn Napier Wallace and his wife. Napier, whose mosaics in the Melbourne Town Hall and the National Gallery were already well known, returned from visiting Europe with the most recent kind of electric furnace for firing and annealing stained glass and an intention to set up a studio in Melbourne. During his tour of Europe the works that attracted him most, the article reports, were those hailing from the medieval period when stained glass was regarded as a craft rather than an art form, namely 4th-13th century France and 12th-13th century Italy.</text>

Using an incident in New South Wales where a circus tiger wandered into a neighbouring house and licked a sleeping child as their impetus, the author claims that animal stories have been popular since the days of Aesop. Amongst other examples, they note that in medieval stories about Reynard the Fox, he was usually depicted as a genial, roguish hero, and that the writers of medieval romances regularly employed the lion to symbolise courage and honour.</text>

Responding to McKenzie&amp;rsquo;s quip that &amp;lsquo;Under the guise of the most advanced democracy you are reverting to regulations which strongly resemble the rigid conditions and strict trade laws of medieval life&amp;rsquo;, the author of the article cites research arguing that medieval workers were comparatively better off than modern workers, and suggests that the old trade guilds only failed when they started admitting the bosses into their membership. With a swipe at the British economy and working conditions, the author concludes that Australian workers will not be frightened by medievalism if it means better conditions and more pay: &amp;lsquo;We who go back 2000 years for our religion have no need to be ashamed of reverting a few centuries to pick up an economic hint or two.                 <text>&lt;p&gt;&amp;lsquo;The Talisman&amp;rsquo; is an article by Robert Power published in 1924 in the &amp;lsquo;Two Minute Talks&amp;rsquo; section of the Launceston newspaper the Examiner. The article is about the importance of putting ones faith in God rather than superstitious charms. The article opens by mentioning the talisman of &amp;lsquo;great heroes&amp;rsquo;, all of whom are medieval.&lt;br /&gt;Hereward the Wake (who fought against the Normans in England in 1070-1) had magic armour, Charlemagne&amp;rsquo;s knight Roland (whose feats are told in the eleventh-century poem The Song of Roland) had an important horn, and King Arthur and his knights have the supernatural sword Excalibur.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
