                <text>In this newspaper article from The West Australian, the author describes progress on the building of the eastern part of St. Maryâ€™s Cathedral in East Perth in June, 1929. He describes the Gothic design of the architecture as a particularly English style dating from the period 1370-1550, characterised by â€œa perpendicularity given it by the extensions of the chief mullions in the windows on to the arches and the addition of horizontal bars or transoms to divide the long lightsâ€. The style is also notable, the article suggests, for its â€œgreat window spacesâ€. In the second half of the article, the author likens the intricate stonework of the 25 masons employed to work on the cathedral to that of guild journeymen building village cathedrals in the middle ages.</text>

                <text>This article from &lt;em&gt;The West Australian&lt;/em&gt; traces the history of Christmas carols back to the medieval period. It dates their origin to the beginning of the thirteenth century, when Francis of Assisi taught children to dance around a model of the manger in the Italian village of Greccio. Subsequently, they were introduced into England through the Mystery and Miracle plays. Although religious in content, the article notes with amusement that the carols were often set to the tune of drinking songs, presumably because they were familiar. Carols and the dances that accompanied them remained popular, the article claims, until Puritan edicts forbade Christmas festivities and all manner of celebration in the seventeenth century. Their survival is credited here to two nineteenth-century English clergymen, who translated a Swedish book of medieval melodies in 1853 and succeeded in reviving interest in carols and old folk songs more generally.</text>

                <text>This article from &lt;em&gt;The West Australian&lt;/em&gt; in 1937 reports on a number of new knighthoods awarded as part of the King&amp;rsquo;s Coronation Honours. For the first time, the article informs readers, the recipients were &amp;lsquo;dubbed&amp;rsquo; by the Governor-General, Lord Gowrie, at Parliament House during a &amp;lsquo;ceremony of medieval pageantry&amp;rsquo;. The ceremony was undertaken with the permission of the King, who was traditionally the only figure with the authority to confer honours with a sword. The act of dubbing involves a light blow to the shoulders of a kneeling recipient with the flat side of a sword. Dubbing is an essential part of the public investiture ceremony and dates to the medieval period.</text>

                <text>A photograph of St Andrewâ€™s Cathedral in Sydney that most likely dates from between 1920 and 1925. St Andrewâ€™s Cathedral is located on George Street in Sydney and is part of the Town Hall group of buildings. It is the oldest cathedral in Australia. Construction of the cathedral was completed in 1868, and it was consecrated by the second Bishop of Sydney, Frederick Barker, on St Andrewâ€™s day (30 November) that year. St Andrewâ€™s Cathedral is built in a Gothic Perpendicular style according to the design of well-known gothic revival architect Edmund T. Blacket. Blacket replaced James Hume as the architect of the cathedral, and had to adapt his plans to conform to the shape and size of foundations that were already in place. The photograph exhibits some of the cathedralâ€™s many decorative pinnacles and traceried gothic windows. One of its two distinctive towers, believed to have been modelled on the fifteenth-century towers of York Minster Cathedral, is also visible in the background. </text>

                  <text>This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed â€˜in plain viewâ€™ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australiaâ€™s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.</text>
