The television advert features three men dressed as warriors from the past using a Gerni to clean their cars and houses, with the Gerni clearly taking the place of a weapon. The men are dressed as a Roman centurion with cape, helmet and breastplate; a Viking (c. 800-1000) wearing a horned helmet and animal skin; and a thirteenth century Mongol wearing a fur-lined conical helmet, fur boots, and upper-body armour.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

&lt;p&gt;"When fighting was almost entirely hand-to-hand, the thorough protection of the hand was necessarily of paramount importance. Armour for the head and body was, after all, but a second line of defence against the attack which penetrated the guard of the weapon. Any damage to the hand which controlled all offensive movements, as well as all parries, would place a combatant at the mercy of his antagonist. But the armourer had not only to give his attention to the protective qualities of the covering which enclosed a part so vulnerable and so likely to receive a wound, he had also to consider how he should least interfere with the use of so complicated a piece of mechanism as the human hand. It was on account of these very important considerations that one finds the gauntlet always more complicated in the details of its construction than the rest of the protective outfit.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Underneath the plate was worn a leather glove, to the fingers and thumb of which small overlapping scales were attached to complete the defence of the hand. Hourglass gauntlets are considered the zenith of medieval gauntlets. An example of this type may be seen on the brass of Sir John de Saint Quintan in Brandesburton Church, Yorkshire, which may be dated at about 1397. The famous effigy of Edward, Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince, in the cathedral church of Canterbury depicts this masterful warrior wearing this kind of hand defence."&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

It was featured on the Facebook site for the Medieval Shoppe, who design historical replicas of swords, armour and other weapons.&#13;

Halberds were especially popular with infantry in Switzerland in the fouteenth and fifteenth century. The Swiss Guard at the Vatican still use ceremonial halberds.&#13;
&#13;
The church, which fell out of use in 1914, was also used as an infants' school, but was later abandoned and has been ever since. The building possesses many Gothic architectural features, such as a vaulted ceiling, and arched doorways and windows.</text>

An image of Slipper, in his ceremonial robes, following the Serjeant-at-Arms and the official mace accompanies the article. The mace plays an important and symbolic role in the House of Representatives, as in the British House of Commons. The association of the mace with parliament most likely originates from the medieval period, when the Kingâ€™s bodyguards, also known as serjeants-at-arms, were each armed with a mace. Gradually, the mace became associated with the customs and rituals of parliamentary ceremony rather than with its former use as a weapon. </text>
