This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

<p>Launceston Church Grammar School has two campuses in the northern Tasmanian city of Launceston. This photograph of a modern interpretation of a medieval tower was taken on the Mowbray campus. The brick square clock tower has eight corner buttresses, most prominent on the lower part of the structure, which end in four corner turrets off the top of the tower.</p>

An account of the resource
<p>St Mark’s Anglican Church is in the northern Tasmanian town of Deloraine. It was designed by William Henry Clayton (1823-1877) in the Gothic Revival style, in particular ‘Decorated’ or ‘Victorian Free’ Gothic. The foundation stone was laid in 1856 and the church was consecrated in 1860. In 1878 the chancel, sanctuary, north transept and rose window were added, and the vestry was added in 1969. As can be seen in one of the photographs, the church is unfinished and a proposed extension to the south façade means that no windows have been added to that side. The most prominent part of St Mark’s is the three story octagonal tower on the north-west corner which is topped by a spire and includes lancet windows, pointed arch gables, and a stair turret. Other Gothic features of the brick church are the buttresses, pointed arch window in the west walls that include four lancet windows and tracery, pointed arch doorways, and a rose window.</p>

An account of the resource
<p>The main entrance to St David’s Cathedral is on Murray Street, Hobart. The cathedral was designed by English architect George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907) in 1865 in the Gothic Revival style. The foundation stone was laid in 1868 by Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the nave was consecrated in 1874. The work was supervised by Henry Hunter (1832-1892). The pointed-arch doorway is entered through an arcade consisting of three pointed-arch entrances. The large west window above the entrance includes tracery, five lancet windows, and leadlight made in Melbourne by Brooke Robinson and installed in 1965. The entrance is flanked by two additional pointed-arch windows featuring three lancet windows each, as well as buttressed turrets.</p>
<p>George Bodley was a well-known architect working in the Gothic Revival style, and in particular he was influenced by late medieval architecture from England and northern Europe. His best known work is perhaps Magdalen College, Oxford.</p>

<p>The square bell tower of St David’s Cathedral, Hobart, was completed in 1936 after the foundation stone had been laid in 1892. The cathedral was designed in 1865 by English architect George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907), and the tower may have been part of his revisions in 1891. However, Hobart architect Alan Cameron Walker (1864-1931) was also involved in the design. The stone tower is in the Gothic Revival style and includes a crenelated parapet, lancet windows, a corner turret topped by a spire, buttresses, a pointed arch doorway, window tracery, and gargoyles.</p>
<p>George Bodley was a well known architect working in the Gothic Revival style, and in particular he was influenced by late medieval architecture from England and northern Europe. His best known work is perhaps Magdalen College, Oxford. </p>

Flamingos Dance Bar at 201 Liverpool Street, Hobart, is in a medieval-inspired building. It has the appearance of a small fortification or castle, with a central tower and six fortified turrets. The brick building is topped by a crenelated parapet, or battlements. The accentuated brickwork along the building’s edges, and the rounded arch windows add to the medieval effect.

<p>Baptist City Church in the Tasmanian city of Launceston was built as Christ Church Congregational Church between 1883 and 1885. The brick and cement building was designed by Melbourne architects Grainger & D’Ebro. It is in the Gothic style and features buttresses, pointed arches on the windows and entrances, tracery on the central windows, a square tower with corner turrets and topped by a spire, lancet windows, and many small pinnacles. The building was purchased by the Baptist Church in 1983.</p>

St Peter’s Church is a stone Anglican church in the Tasmanian town of Oatlands. The church was designed by architects John Lee Archer and Robert de Little and building commenced in 1838. The building is in the Gothic Revival style and features lancet windows, a pointed arch entrance, buttresses, a porch, clock moldings, and a square tower topped by a crenellated parapet and corner turrets.

This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

An account of the resource
The Masonic Club of Tasmania is one of a number of heritage buildings along Hobart’s Macquarie Street. It was originally built as Hutchins School between 1847 and 1849, and was designed by the Tasmanian-born architect William Archer. The bluestone building has sandstone trimmings and is built in the Gothic style, particularly the central tower and turret that feature parapets and crenellation. Another Gothic feature is the large pointed-arch window with tracery on the ground level.
