Webb, &amp;ldquo;A Critical Biography of Edwin James Brady 1869-1952&amp;rdquo; PhD Thesis, The University of Sydney, 1972, p.95) concerns the fortunes of a triad of ill-starred lovers. On one hand there is brave Sir Maurice, the wealthy and impetuous knight who excels in chivalric conduct but who is tragically slain while crusading in the Holy Land. On the other is the golden-haired Lady Alice, a romantic counterpart for him who naively &amp;ldquo;vowed [...] Her Lord he&amp;rsquo;d be&amp;rdquo;. Unknown to either of these two quixotically tempered day-dreaming protagonists is the real target of Cupid&amp;rsquo;s dart, the &amp;ldquo;crow-haired&amp;rdquo; ladies maid, who recognises from the outset that her suit is hopeless, and who must content herself with plaintive prayers and &amp;ldquo;A [hasty] daylight glance.&amp;rdquo; The tragedy of the missed opportunity that is all too often &amp;lsquo;staring you in the face&amp;rsquo; is a theme that Brady also favours and highlights in his less accomplished, more light-hearted medievalist poem, &amp;lsquo;On Keira (See: &lt;a href="http://ausmed.arts.uwa.edu.au/items/show/1032" target="_self"&gt;http://ausmed.arts.uwa.edu.au/items/show/1032&lt;/a&gt;).&amp;rsquo;</text>

                <text>This poem, which is best described as &amp;ldquo;an anti-nostalgic demystification of chivalric heroism&amp;rdquo; (Louise D&amp;rsquo;Arcens, &lt;em&gt;Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910&lt;/em&gt;, Turnhout, Brepols, 2011, p.143), draws a link to the medieval past to suggest that little has changed with regards human behaviour. &amp;lsquo;As it is in the Days of Now,&amp;rsquo; is a tale of cover-up, falsity, and cuckoldry. Here, everyone but Sir William is aware of an affair that took place between his Lady and his best friend while he was fighting in the Holy Land. The poor man even unwittingly drinks wine in the company of his rival and false friend. Lawson&amp;rsquo;s ubiquitous narrator states, &amp;ldquo;And the true friend pledges the false friend thrice.&amp;rdquo; Lawson refuses to romanticise love in accordance with medieval notions of chivalry. Lust and cupidity are here disguised and subsumed into &amp;lsquo;noblesse oblige,&amp;rsquo; and Lawson&amp;rsquo;s poem rather denigrates selfish &amp;lsquo;knightly&amp;rsquo; behaviour, with its false friendships, cuckoldry, and risible notions of Courtly Love. The poem in fact, is an angry riposte to nineteenth-century nostalgia and naivet&amp;eacute; as it relates to the individual&amp;rsquo;s lack of nous and foresight.</text>

                <text>At the time Victor Daley composed this poem, a debate had erupted over whether chivalry and romance, at least within the Australian context, were dead. That was certainly the argument put forward in an earlier poem, &amp;lsquo;Romance&amp;rsquo; by L. D., which was published in &lt;em&gt;The Bulletin&lt;/em&gt; in 1885. In December 1902 Victor Daley wrote his own explanation (See Louise D&amp;rsquo;Arcens,&lt;em&gt; Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910,&lt;/em&gt; Turnhout, Brepols, 2011, p.139), beginning: &amp;ldquo;They say that fair Romance is dead, and in her cold grave lying low.&amp;rdquo; Nearly two years later, in September 1904 and writing under the pseudonym Creeve Roe, Daley penned this more credible hypothesis for the continued survival of chivalry and romance. Although in this later poem the medieval content is limited to a fleeting reference to the elaborate sonnets of Petrarch (d. 1374) and the veneer of archaic-sounding expressions, it is prefaced with an explanation that ties it to the debate over the death of chivalry and romance. In Daley&amp;rsquo;s previous poem &amp;lsquo;Romance&amp;rsquo; (1902), we find more explicit Arthurian references to &amp;ldquo;Gold Gudrun, and Guinevere,&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Merlin wise,&amp;rdquo; and &amp;ldquo;Castle Perilous, beyond the dark Enchanted Wood.&amp;rdquo; While Daley&amp;rsquo;s poem &amp;lsquo;Romance&amp;rsquo; underlines the continued existence of romantic sensibilities despite the fact that, as a rapidly developing country, Australia was dominated by Mammon and Machinery (See D&amp;rsquo;Arcens, p.139), the light-hearted Creeve Roe poem offers a more practical and mischievous solution. The surest way, says the poet, for the continuance of chivalrous behaviour in an Australian setting, is for women to live up to the impossible standards imposed on them by tradition and the whimsy of men.</text>

                <text>&amp;lsquo;Rivals&amp;rsquo; is an interesting attempt by medievalist writer Victor Daley to transform what must have been a fairly commonplace incident at that time into something more than it seems. The poem describes a young man, Sir Valour, taking leave of his sweetheart (&amp;ldquo;My Lady Fair&amp;rdquo;), and going off to fight in the Boer War. The leave-taking is transformed into a medieval tale, a deliberately romantic historicization of the present (Louise D&amp;rsquo;Arcens, &lt;em&gt;Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910,&lt;/em&gt; Turnhout, Brepols, 2011, p.110), whereby the couple pledge true love and the lady presents him with a token of her favour, before he sets out for foreign lands. In her knight&amp;rsquo;s protracted absence, Sir Comfort, an older and much wealthier man, slyly wins the favours of &amp;ldquo;Sweet Isabel,&amp;rdquo; and marries her. This turnaround is presumably hastened by the giving of a number of beautiful and very costly items: &amp;ldquo;Some simple rubies, strings of pearls / And diamonds for [her] hair.&amp;rdquo; Here Creeve Roe contrasts the stark unpleasant realities of the war with quasi-medieval &amp;lsquo;courtly&amp;rsquo; values. The final scene, when the young man dies &amp;ldquo;in lands remote,&amp;rdquo; with Isabel&amp;rsquo;s name upon his lips, is one of shattered dreams and misplaced expectations.</text>

It allows us a fleeting glimpse of what has (or may have) been, even though we find ourselves standing in the waking world â€œUnder blue skies in a fair land.â€ True Romance, it suggests, has gone the way of stately knights in armour, beautiful â€˜maidens forlorn,â€™ castles, and all the accoutrements and trappings of the chivalric medieval past. In gothic literary fashion the buildings, mores and customs have all crumbled, decayed, and vanished, and the poem â€œlament[s] the irredeemable loss of this world, which â€˜Ages ago [...] faded out and diedâ€™â€ (Louise D'Arcens, Old Songs in the Timeless Land: Medievalism in Australian Literature 1840-1910 Turnhout, Brepols, 2011, p.139).                 <text>&lt;p&gt;This work by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a&amp;nbsp;renowned nineteenth-century painter and member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, depicts a young woman in a voluminous medieval-looking gown raising a golden cup decorated with a heart shaped design to her lips. In her other hand she clasps the lid of the cup to her breast. A lace cloth, ivy (the symbol of fidelity) and 4 brass plates (2 depicting deer, 1 depicting Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit and the other showing Hosea and Joshua with a bunch of grapes) are visible in the background. This painting is one of three watercolour replicas that Rossetti produced in 1867 of an oil painting that is currently held by the National Gallery of Western Art, Tokyo. The frame of the original painting is inscribed "Douce nuit et joyeux jour/ A chevalier de bel amour (Sweet night and pleasant day/to the beautifully loved knight)," which suggests that the woman is toasting her recently departed knight. The source of these words is uncertain, but it is thought that Rossetti, well-known for his poetry as well as his artwork, probably wrote it himself. The Arthurian theme and subject matter of the painting are typical of Rossetti&amp;rsquo;s work from the mid-1850s, and the work of the second phase of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood more generally. As Elizabeth Prettejohn suggests, these paintings convey a sense in which the &amp;ldquo;the world presented in the pictures is somehow distant or remote from the everyday&amp;rdquo;. They depict scenes of leave-taking, but the circumstances are left untold, and we do not learn the fortunes of the figures involved. This, she suggests, &amp;ldquo;contrasts abruptly with the narrative specificity of most Victorian painting, and of earlier Pre-Raphaelite pictures. The precise detail in the drawings gives us a medieval world that is apparently complete in itself, but to which we as spectators only have partial access&amp;rdquo; (Elizabeth Prettejohn, &lt;em&gt;The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites&lt;/em&gt;, Tate Publishing, London, 2000, pp.106-7).</text>

At the time the article was written in 2010, the second season of the series was being aired on Australian television by Channel 10. The characters and setting of the show are based on figures and places from Arthurian legend, however, the plot focuses on the lives of the characters prior to the mythologised events of the medieval legend. The characters include Merlin, Arthur, Guinevere, Gaius and Morgana, and the story is set in Camelot. Merlinâ€™s Producer, Johnny Capps, is quoted as saying that they needed a mythological tale and he thought that Merlin â€œjust seemed to be right for re-interpretation for a 21st- century audienceâ€. On the motivation for the plot, he continued: â€œWe decided to start before they were famous because what appealed to us was a story of empowerment. What if we had a young Arthur who was not yet King and Merlin as a young wizard, coping with trying to be a teenager and at the same time his destiny and extraordinary power?                 <text>In this review of Jeffery Farnol&amp;rsquo;s historical romance &amp;ldquo;The King Liveth&amp;rdquo;,  the novel is recommended to readers who appreciate the &amp;ldquo;picturesque  recreation of the England of those far off [Anglo-Saxon] days&amp;rdquo;. Set in  the ninth-century and culminating in the Battle of Ethundane (Edington)  in 878, the reviewer claims that this tale of Alfred the Great is based  on evidence from chronicles. This most likely refers to the &amp;ldquo;Anglo-Saxon  Chronicle&amp;rdquo;, and perhaps Asser&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Life of Alfred&amp;rdquo;, both written during  Alfred&amp;rsquo;s reign. After being forced to flee to the marshes around  Athelney following the invasion of the Viking great army led by Guthrum  (where the burning of the cakes episode mentioned by the reviewer  supposedly happened), Alfred was able to rally an army and defeat the  Vikings. The survivors fled to Chippenham but following a two-week siege  they asked for a treaty.
