                <text>This woodblock print, from Salvatore Zofrea&amp;rsquo;s &lt;em&gt;Appassionata&lt;/em&gt; collection, was gifted to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by the Italian-Australian artist in 2002. Depicting a scene in Chartres Cathedral, it features the gothic arches, vaulted ceilings and, especially, some of the magnificent 12th-13th century stained glass that remains intact and for which Chartres Cathedral is famous. Chartres Cathedral was constructed between 1194 and 1250 in the French High Gothic style, and its architecture has only undergone minor changes since the 13th century. It is commonly held to be one of the finest surviving examples of this style.</text>

                <text>An image of the â€˜Caxton Windowâ€™ located in the Mitchell Reading Room at the State Library of New South Wales. This stained glass window was created in a neo-medieval figurative style by John Radecki of Ashwin and Co., Sydney in 1941. It shows Englishman William Caxton presenting a copy of the Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye (1474) to his patron Margaret of Burgundy. The Caxton theme is an effective means of commemorating a momentous achievement in the history of English literature, namely the ready dissemination of cultural values and the arts via the printed page. Caxton later set up a printing press in Westminster in 1476, initially using type that he brought over from Bruges. This didactic window is superbly executed, and the significance of books and learning is highly appropriate for a library reading room. Regrettably the windowâ€™s finer details are not easily discernible from ground level. The placement of this window in the Mitchell reading room, which houses the early Australiana collection, provides a bridge between the two continents (Europe and Australia). </text>

                <text>In this article, the author debates how Â£5000 earmarked for a Queenâ€™s Jubilee commemoration by the WA Legislative Council could be best spent. The author begins by outlining the three suggestions that had been put forward, namely the establishment of a public library, the building of a poor house that would euphemistically be called a â€œBenevolent Asylumâ€, or a festive gala for the colony with a banquet and fireworks. The author then goes to lengths to discount the utility of the gala idea, and the appropriateness and representative benefit of the reformatory idea, before suggesting that the building of a public library would best suit the occasion. For its capacity to humanise, cultivate and civilise, the article links the practice of reading with modernity and the Victorian ideals of progress and improvement. In doing so, it defines the Victorian â€˜spiritâ€™ in opposition to an â€˜otherâ€™, medieval past: â€œFrom the introduction of printing is dated the decay of medieval-ism and the rise of modern European progress. To the introduction of cheap and wholesome literature may the marvellous onward march of the Victorian era be chiefly attributed. How better can the Jubilee of that era be perpetuated than by founding an institution which embodies above all the spirit to which that success is due.â€</text>
