A longer and more formal procession from the lobby of Parliament House to the Chamber of the House of Representatives has been introduced by Peter Slipper (the Speaker) on Tuesdays, the article explains, so that visitors and members of the public are better able to witness the ceremonial opening of parliamentary proceedings. An image of Slipper, in his ceremonial robes, following the Serjeant-at-Arms and the official mace accompanies the article. The mace plays an important and symbolic role in the House of Representatives, as in the British House of Commons. The association of the mace with parliament most likely originates from the medieval period, when the Kingâ€™s bodyguards, also known as serjeants-at-arms, were each armed with a mace. Gradually, the mace became associated with the customs and rituals of parliamentary ceremony rather than with its former use as a weapon. </text>

The Principality of Hutt River is located 595km north of Perth in Western Australia. It comprises an area of approximately 18, 500 acres of farmland and is ruled as an independent sovereign nation by Prince Leonard I and his wife Princess Shirley. Following a dispute over damaging new Wheat Quotas introduced by the Australian government in 1969, and subsequent laws to enforce them, WA farmer Leonard George Casley seceded from Australia in April 1970. He based his legal argument for secession on a number of legal principles and laws, including medieval laws such as Magna Carta, the Statute of Westminster and the 1496 Treason Act. As he explains to Mick Joffe during this interview, &amp;ldquo;The Government had no right to take anyone&amp;rsquo;s ability to make a living or to take their land without compensation. These rights Australia inherited from the Bill of Rights and the Magna Carta&amp;rdquo;. Prince Leonard also established his own College of Heraldry in the Principality of Hutt River, and estimates that (as of 1995) he had bestowed approximately 200 peerages and knighthoods. &lt;p&gt;Furthermore, Prince Leonard I declares an ongoing interest in the science of gravity, relativity and physics, and established a Royal College of Advanced Research in the Principality of Hutt River. During this interview Joffe cites feedback that Casley received from the Department of Astronamy [sic] at Indiana University in 1963 regarding papers he published on Relativity and the Solar system. The letter suggests that he may have &amp;ldquo;made the first fundamental contribution in this field since Copernicus&amp;rdquo; (For a copy of this letter, see R.C. Hyslop, &lt;em&gt;The Man: His Royal Highness Prince Leonard, &amp;nbsp;Sovereign of the Hutt River Province Principality (An Independent Sovereign State),&lt;/em&gt; Publication Printers, West Perth, [1979], p.12). Copernicus was a Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who proposed the heliocentric model of cosmology whereby the sun remains stationary and is orbited by the Earth.                 <text>In this article from the Western Argus, the significance and history of the mace in parliamentary proceedings is explained. The author describes the mace used in the Victorian Legislative Assembly as a sceptre surmounted by a cross, an orb and the crown of England. It is also decorated with the waratah flower of Australia, the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland and the harp of Ireland. The symbolic and ceremonial function of the mace in the opening and closing of parliamentary proceedings is explained, and the history of the mace as a weapon of medieval warfare is noted. The article suggests that the association of the mace with parliament is likely to originate from the medieval period: â€œIn medieval England the king appointed a Royal bodyguard of stalwart men, gaudily uniformed, and each bearing a mace. They came to be known as serjeants-at-arms. When Parliament was divided into two Houses â€“ the Commons and the Lords â€“ two serjeants-at-arms were provided from the Kingâ€™s bodyguard. The institution has survived. With the serjeant-at-arms has remained the mace, not as a weapon but as a symbol of office; and gradually the mace came to be associated with all the ceremonies and customs of the Commonsâ€. The article goes on to explain the traditional rivalry between the House of Commons and the House of Lords concerning the superior authority of the mace or its equivalent in the House of lords, the black rod (in the keeping of The Usher of the Black Rod). Traditional and symbolic rituals involving the mace and the black rod are also described. If the Usher of the Black Rod approaches the House of Commons to summon the Speaker, for example, the door is ceremoniously closed on him and he is required to knock three times and beg admittance. Similarly, the serjeant-at-arms is not permitted to enter the House of Lords without first surrendering the mace to the doorkeeper. </text>

                <text>In this article rebutting criticisms levelled at the Australian Government for its decision to purchase an inspeximus copy (1297) of Magna Carta in 1952, the author begins by reminding readers that the important medieval document would be placed on display in the National Library, where it could be viewed by members of the public. He goes on to explain the significance of Magna Carta, stating that it did not function merely to protect the rights of barons as was often thought, but also those of â€˜the Church, merchants, cities, towns and boroughsâ€™. Additionally, he continues, it set up a judicial and administrative system and established precedents to guarantee the liberty of all subjects. Examples are then provided to support the authorâ€™s claim that medieval people recognised the wider remit of Magna Carta, including that of a villein who invoked the Charter to sue a Prior and a tenantâ€™s widow who invoked it against an Earl.</text>

                <text>In 1935, a disagreement arose in the WA State Parliament over the implications of proposed amendments to the Bulk Handling Bill. In particular, concern was raised by Mr Latham, the Leader of the Opposition, that an amendment to Clause 20 would invest the Governor with the authority to change its terms and conditions, and would essentially give the Kingâ€™s representative an unprecedented power to vary legislation after it was passed by the two Houses of Parliament. In response to a rebuttal by Mr Troy that the Kingâ€™s representative would only act on the advice of his ministers, this newspaper article cites Mr Latham as saying the Minister must have known he was misleading his members, adding that â€œHe proposed to change the whole system of constitutional government. He was going back to the medieval days of 400 years beforeâ€. The amendment was eventually agreed to by a majority vote, and the Bill was passed.</text>

                  <text>This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed â€˜in plain viewâ€™ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australiaâ€™s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions.                 <text>During her first royal visit in 1954, Queen Elizabeth II opened the sitting of Australiaâ€™s federal parliament at Parliament House on 15 February 1954. As this photograph from the Western Mail shows, she wore her coronation gown and the sash of the Order of the Garter.&#13;
â€˜The Most Noble Order of the Garterâ€™ is the highest order of chivalry in the British heraldic system. It was established by Edward III in 1348, and membership was limited to the sovereign, the Prince of Wales and twenty-four knights. Over time, the membership has been widened to make allowances for members of the British royal family and foreign monarchs. &#13;
