<p>This 11 minute film on YouTube shows highlights of the 2012 Balingup Medieval Carnivale held in the town of Balingup in the south-west of Western Australia on August 25-26. The film was made by Michael Cheffins for ZigZagCommunityArts Inc., and the soundtrack is played by Minerva’s Tower and Trio Grosso. The film includes the carnival parade with floats, banners, and people in medieval dress, a harp player, combat between knights in armour and helmets using shields and swords.</p>

A digital photograph of the parade at the Balingup Medieval Carnivale. One of the highlights of the parade was an appropriately green and scaly smoke breathing winged dragon on wheels pulled by a chain. Dragons are a popular element of the medieval period, occurring in Old English (Anglo-Saxon) literature, most famously in Beowulf, on the prows of some Viking ships, and as the victim of St George. More recently, dragons have featured in a number of stories by Tolkien, and perhaps in the popular imagination threatening damsels.

A close-up digital photograph of a section of the parade at the Balingup Medieval Carnivale. This image features an impromptu sword-fight. Unfortunately for the combatant on horseback, he has no clear height advantage over his opponent on foot. The parade went through the town of Balingup before ending up at the carnivale site. It took place on both days of the carnivale in the early afternoon.

A close-up digital photograph of a Viking dragon boat in the Balingup Medieval Carnivale. The warriors in the boat, possibly setting out on a raid, are quite accurately attired. The three warriors at the back of the boat are wearing helmets similar to those known from excavations of Vendal era (the period immediately preceding the Viking Age) sites in Sweden. The lack of body armour is also realistic for all but the most wealthy of warriors.
