An historian investigates. The novel was inspired by the life of the Anglo-Saxon missionary Winfrith/St Boniface. Amongst information directly related to the novel, the associated website includes recommendations for those wanting to read Anglo-Saxon literature and invites people to contact the author, who has an Honours degree in History from UWA, about Anglo-Saxon literature. The website also includes photographs of some of the creative publicity used to advertise the book, including a &amp;lsquo;medieval marathon&amp;rsquo;, by bicycle, around the Swan River with the author dressed as a warrior-monk being chased by four devils!&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The Anglo-Saxon Winfrith/St Boniface is often referred to as the Apostle of the Germans and was the first archbishop of Mainz. He was killed trying to convert the Frisians in 754 or 755. &amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

The film is based on  Stanley J. Weyman&amp;rsquo;s historical novel of the same name. The novel is  described in the article as a medieval romance, although it is set in  seventeenth-century France. The story opens in 1630, when Gil de Berault  sets out on a search for fugitive Huguenot Henri de Cocheforet, on the  orders of Cardinal Richelieu. He has offered his martial skills to  Richelieu in exchange for his life after being arrested for duelling in  Paris. Although he does indeed find and arrest M. de Cocheforet, he  realises that he has fallen in love with his sister and lets him go free  to restore his honour. The story ends on the Day of the Dupes with the  marriage of de Berault and de Cocheforet.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>In this review of Jeffery Farnol&amp;rsquo;s historical romance &amp;ldquo;The King Liveth&amp;rdquo;,  the novel is recommended to readers who appreciate the &amp;ldquo;picturesque  recreation of the England of those far off [Anglo-Saxon] days&amp;rdquo;. Set in  the ninth-century and culminating in the Battle of Ethundane (Edington)  in 878, the reviewer claims that this tale of Alfred the Great is based  on evidence from chronicles. This most likely refers to the &amp;ldquo;Anglo-Saxon  Chronicle&amp;rdquo;, and perhaps Asser&amp;rsquo;s &amp;ldquo;Life of Alfred&amp;rdquo;, both written during  Alfred&amp;rsquo;s reign. After being forced to flee to the marshes around  Athelney following the invasion of the Viking great army led by Guthrum  (where the burning of the cakes episode mentioned by the reviewer  supposedly happened), Alfred was able to rally an army and defeat the  Vikings. The survivors fled to Chippenham but following a two-week siege  they asked for a treaty.                 <text>Victor Hugoâ€™s novel, Notre-Dame de Paris, anglicised to â€˜The Hunchback of Notre Dameâ€™ explores a number of themes: the role of religious fanaticism in medieval theology, passion and, for Hugo, old versus new Paris. Franceâ€™s most famous medieval cathedral is the â€˜starâ€™ of the show and functions as a backdrop for and focus of the story. The cathedral is portrayed as a place of political and criminal sanctuary (Westminster Church in fourteenth-century London) and a symbol of all that is decaying in Paris. The novel mobilized interest in the cathedral to such an extent that a restoration project followed shortly after. It strengthened a worldwide interest in gothic revival architecture. The review in the West Australian suggests that â€˜religious offenceâ€™ occurs in the novel but has been ironed out in the film. Whether this offence is anti-Catholic rhetoric or sensitivity to Catholic sentiment in Australia is speculative. &#13;

                <text>In this article from the Western Mail newspaper, notice is given about the publication  of Henry Jamesâ€™s novel â€œThe Other Houseâ€. The novel had been published by William Heinemann in London the previous year (1896). The author of the article warns that modern readers may not be prepared for the confronting nature of the murder at the heart of the novelâ€™s plot, in which the character of Rose Armiger drowns a four-year-old child and blames it on a rival in a complicated love triangle.  The article links Rose Armigerâ€™s â€˜wickednessâ€™ with a sense of medieval barbarity, suggesting that â€œit is only in medieval history that we are prepared to find murderers who wantonly destroy innocent babes for the sake of tacking the deed upon an enemyâ€. </text>
