The four minute film made by Belinda Bennett was uploaded to YouTube on November 1, 2012. Alana (a member of the medieval band Minerva’s Tower) plays a hurdy gurdy and wears medieval clothing. Aucassin et Nicolette is an anonymous twelfth or thirteenth century French chantefable (sung story) which combines prose and verse. Description An account of the resource This photograph shows Alana Bennett playing a six stringed Phoenix Standard hurdy gurdy made by Helmut Gotschy in Germany (<a href="http://www.gotschy.com">www.gotschy.com</a>). The hurdy gurdy is a stringed instrument played by using a crank-turned wheel. It developed from fiddles and was first used during the medieval period. The predecessor of the hurdy gurdy, the organistrum, is first mentioned in a treatise found in a manuscript written at Augsburg (Germany) in c. 1100. Alana presented a paper at the ‘Receptions: Medieval and Early Modern Cultural Appropriations’ conference held at The University of Western Australia in August 2012 and gave an impromptu demonstration of the hurdy gurdy during a break. Description An account of the resource Formed in 2005, Harlequin is a four-piece band from Tasmania who play medieval music taken from medieval manuscripts. As well as vocal and percussion a number of medieval instruments are played, including hammered dulcimer, hurdy gurdy, moraharpa, shawm, vielle, and whistle. Many of the instruments are made by band member Harry Wass. Much of the band’s repertoire is drawn from the 13th century manuscript Cantigas de Santa Maria which contains 400 songs. The manuscript came from the court of Alfonso 10th of Spain and the songs are sung in the medieval language Galician Portuguese.
