It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials. It was created by the brick and roofing tile company Wunderlich and featured small buildings based on fairytales. The castle was known as Old King Cole’s Castle, named after the figure in the British folk song/nursery rhyme. The small brick castle is reached by crossing a moat and has an arched entrance, crenellation, a tower, and balistraria (arrowslits). Gothic features of the house include the arched windows and steeped pitch of the roof. This photograph shows a boy, presumably Jack, climbing a beanstalk that grows to the roof of the house. Jack and the Beanstalk is an enduringly popular English folktale which has existed in some form since at least the mid-18th century. Versions of the tale often have medievalism aspects, especially in the depiction of the giant, where he might be thought to represent an uncouth medieval past.
