The spoon is made from food grade pewter. It is described by the catalogue as ‘English,’ and of a type and design that was common between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. At the tip of the handle there is a stylised acorn design, symbolising life, fertility, and strength (See Gertrude Jobes, Dictionary of Mythology Folklore and Symbols, New York, The Scarecrow Press, 1962, vol. 1, p.27). The acorn was also, as the catalogue suggests, regarded as a talisman against cholera and fluxes. These properties likely explain its decorative appeal for dining utensils.
