This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

An account of the resource
<p>The Mowbray campus of the Launceston Church Grammar School in Launceston, Tasmanian, has a number of buildings of different eras with medieval features. These include the administration building whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce (1883-1967) in 1923, and the more recent Henrietta Cooper Music School and the small corner tower. All of these buildings feature buttresses and rounded Tudor, or four-centred, arch doorways, and the buttresses of the corner tower continue to form crenellation, whilst the corner buttress at the entrance to the administration building ends in a pointed arch. The music school also has a bay window, a common feature of Gothic Revival architecture.</p>

<p>Launceston Church Grammar School has two campuses in the northern Tasmanian city of Launceston. The relatively recent brick Tom Room Building continues the medieval theme found elsewhere on the campus by the use buttresses that end as crenellation. The building also features the school coat of arms/crest of a castle with towers and crenelated parapets on a shield, as well as a drawing of a Gothic pointed arch doorway. The building has drama and multi-purpose classrooms. This photograph was taken on the Mowbray campus.</p>

<p>Launceston Church Grammar School has two campuses in the northern Tasmanian city of Launceston. The school crest, or coat of arms, features a shield with the image of a castle with crenelated parapets and square towers. Above the castle is an open book and two bees. Below the shield is a Latin tag which reads ‘Unless the Lord is with us, our labour is in vain’. Featured is an ornate sculptured crest and a more recent simplified version. These photographs were taken on the Mowbray campus.</p>

An account of the resource
The former St Peter’s Catholic Church is in the small Tasmanian town of Kempton. The foundation stone for the red brick church was laid by Monsignor Gilleran in 1918 and the building was completed in 1923. St Peter’s was designed by architect Alan Cameron Walker (1864-1931) in the Romanesque Revival style. It features semi-circular arches on the doorways, windows, and decorative details. The building also has corner buttresses, a tower with a parapet and corner crenels, stained glass windows, and a spire. It is now a private residence.

<p>The Alfred Ibbott (1844-1928) memorial window is in St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in the Tasmanian town of Bothwell. The window (on the left in the photograph) is one of two lancet windows parrallel. The figures are framed by a representation of elaborate Gothic stonework with columns, pointed finials, pointed arches, and a crenelated parapet in the upper section. The more recent window on the right includes a Romanesque semi-circular arch.</p>

This Collection analyses popular medievalism in material and public culture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, with an emphasis on popular medievalist theatre, parades and public spectacles, as well as recreational, literary and political associations. An account of the resource
<p>This wooden bird box was created by Cameo Alpacas and Garden Art, a company run by Pearl Anderson and Elod Gunther and based in Woodbridge in southern Tasmania. The bird box is a recreation of a medieval castle, complete with corner towers with crenelated parapets, with the walls between the towers also having crenellation. The pointed arch entrance to the castle includes a possible representation of a bridge or drawbridge, which the bird could sit on. The photograph was taken at the Tasmanian Craft fair held in the town of Deloraine.</p>

Medievalism at the Foundations

An account of the resource
This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.

Description
An account of the resource
The Edward Nicholas (d. 1881) memorial window is in St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in the Tasmanian town of Bothwell. The window consists of two lancet windows, each of which features Christ. He is framed by a representation of elaborate Gothic building with towers, crenellation, and spires. The window on the right includes two knights below Christ (who carries a pennant, or long narrow flag, of St George) dressed in plate armour and helmets of the late medieval period. One of the knights wears a sword.

This Collection analyses popular medievalism in material and public culture from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, with an emphasis on popular medievalist theatre, parades and public spectacles, as well as recreational, literary and political associations. It explores the ways in which medievalism was not simply derivative but also local and disctinctive. In this Collection you will find items relating to medievalism in public contexts and popular culture, and the revisitation or reenactment of the Middle Ages by groups such as the Society for Creative Anachronism.

An account of the resource
<p>These wooden bird boxes and bird cage were created by Cameo Alpacas and Garden Art, a company run by Pearl Anderson and Elod Gunther and based in Woodbridge in southern Tasmania. The bird cage on the right is in the Gothic style that was commonly employed in ecclesiastical architecture in Europe between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries. The body of the bird cage is four decorated columns supporting pointed arches. This is topped by a tower and a tall spire. The two bird boxes are recreations of medieval castles, complete with towers and crenelated parapets. The entrance to the castle includes a possible representation of a bridge or drawbridge, which the bird could sit on. The photograph was taken at the Tasmanian Craft fair held in the town of Deloraine.</p>
