                <text>&lt;p&gt;The interior of St Andrew&amp;rsquo;s Church of England (Anglican) in the small Tasmanian town of Westbury continues the Gothic Revival style of its exterior. &amp;nbsp;The nave was designed by the convict architect James Blackburn (1803-1854) in 1840-02. Of particular note are the various carvings by Tasmanian woodcarver Ellen Nora Payne (1865-1962) of Hobart, who had been born in the Westbury district. These include the pulpit which was carved in London sometime between 1901 and 1906, and the &amp;lsquo;Seven Sisters&amp;rsquo; rood, or chancel, screen completed in 1938 as a memorial to her seven dead sisters. The screen features a recreation of tracery common in Gothic windows. Other Gothic features are the large pointed arch east window with tracery made up of three lancet windows with stained glass, lancet windows in the north and south walls, and the internal pointed-arch doors and doorways.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>&lt;p&gt;This memorial board of the &amp;lsquo;St Andrews Memorial Endowment Roll&amp;rsquo; is in St Andrew&amp;rsquo;s Church of England (Anglican) in the small Tasmanian town of Westbury. It was carved by the Tasmanian woodcarver Ellen Nora Payne (1865-1962) of Hobart, who had been born in the Westbury district. As befits a church built in the Gothic Revival architectural style, the memorial board includes Gothic touches, primarily in the central panel. The carving of the Virgin and Child is housed in a Gothic niche featuring a pointed arch ending in a decorated finial. Behind the arch is the representation of two Gothic pointed arch windows with tracery forming a cross. There is also a finial on both vertical ends of the board.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

About the Mitchell Building:&#13;

The Mitchell Building was designed by South Australian architect Willliam McMinn in the Victorian Academic Gothic style. It was completed between 1879 and 1881, and officially opened in 1882. The Mitchell Building was the first building on the North Terrace campus of The University of Adelaide and originally housed all of the university disciplines. It was named the Mitchell Building in 1961 in honour of Sir William Mitchell, who was Vice-Chancellor of the university from 1916-1942 and Chancellor from 1942-1948. Today it is used as an administrative hub. The Mitchell Buildingâ€™s neo-gothic features include its steeply gabled roof, lancet windows, decorative stone tracery and the roof fleche/spire.</text>

The altar features a hand-carved knight and dragon against a St George shield to portray the St George legend. It was carved by Robin McArthur and installed in the Cathedral in 1991. The addition of this new altar at the head of the nave enabled the Eucharist service to be conducted closer to, and facing, the laity. Continuing the traditional associations of Christianity with military service that are present throughout the Cathedral, the image of St George as an armoured knight has the effect of, as Andrew Lynch has suggested, conflating piety and prowess in a positive way.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The legend of St George slaying the dragon is Eastern in origin. It is thought to have been brought back to England by crusaders and was popularised and incorporated into hagiographies of St George in the medieval period in works such as Vincent of Beauvais&amp;rsquo; Speculum Historiale and Jacobus de Voragine&amp;rsquo;s Golden Legend (c.1260). As with most Australian images of St George and the Dragon, the image features the knight and dragon in combat, and there is no sign of the maiden who was being saved in the original tale.                 <text>In this article, John T. McMahon describes a visit to the city of Nuremburg in 1936. Arriving only days after one of the Naziâ€™s infamous Nuremburg rallies, he notes the swastikaâ€™s still lining the streets and parade ground. For most of the article, however, McMahon concentrates on explaining Nuremburgâ€™s â€œsplendidâ€ medieval history, and the lasting traces of its past in the physical landscape. He describes tracing the line of the medieval walls, looking in awe at the large merchant houses with their elaborate adornments and recognising, as he looked over the city from the castle, why itâ€™s winding streets and narrow alleys had always held such a fascination for artists and etchers. He identifies Nuremburg as a town famous for its medieval craft guilds, and describes the artistic training and accomplishments of its most famous son, Albrecht DÃ¼rer. He concludes by describing the mastery of the carving work by Adam Kraft in St Laurenceâ€™s Church, which carried the gaze up to the vaulted ceiling â€œlike Shelleyâ€™s skylarkâ€. </text>

                  <text>This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed â€˜in plain viewâ€™ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australiaâ€™s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.</text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;Image of the jarrah nave altar at St George&amp;rsquo;s Cathedral in Perth, Western Australia. The altar features a hand-carved knight and dragon against a St George shield to portray the St George legend. It was carved by Robin McArthur and installed in the Cathedral in 1991. The addition of this new altar at the head of the nave enabled the Eucharist service to be conducted closer to, and facing, the laity. Continuing the traditional associations of Christianity with military service that are present throughout the Cathedral, the image of St George as an armoured knight has the effect of, as Andrew Lynch has suggested, conflating piety and prowess in a positive way.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt; The legend of St George slaying the dragon is Eastern in origin. It is thought to have been brought back to England by crusaders and was popularised and incorporated into hagiographies of St George in the medieval period in works such as Vincent of Beauvais&amp;rsquo; Speculum Historiale and Jacobus de Voragine&amp;rsquo;s Golden Legend (c.1260). As with most Australian images of St George and the Dragon, the image features the knight and dragon in combat, and there is no sign of the maiden who was being saved in the original tale.
