Title A name given to the resource Medievalism at the Foundations Description An account of the resource This Collection illustrates how medievalism has always existed ‘in plain view’ in Australian public life, as a conspicuous cultural memory ghosting Australia’s modernity. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australia’s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Description An account of the resource The Colonial Mutual Life Building in Hobart, Tasmania, was designed by Sydney architects Hennesy & Hennesy and completed in 1936. It is in the Stripped Classical style with Art Deco elements, whilst the sculptural embellishments are reminiscent of Gothic architecture. The sculptures are similar to the gargoyles found on Gothic cathedrals, although in this case they appear to be purely decorative. They include eagles, lions and the faces of beasts with their tongues out.
