It is in the Stripped Classical style with Art Deco elements, whilst the sculptural embellishments are reminiscent of Gothic architecture. The sculptures are similar to the gargoyles found on Gothic cathedrals, although in this case they appear to be purely decorative. They include eagles, lions and the faces of beasts with their tongues out.</text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;The current Government House of Tasmania, the third in Hobart, was designed by the Director of Public Works William Porden Kay and built between 1855 and 1857 in the Gothic Revival style. Governor Henry Fox Young took up residence on January 2, 1858. The building is located in the Queen&amp;rsquo;s Domain and features bas-relief sculpture, gargoyles, and tracery on the windows. Its most prominent Gothic features are found at the main entrance (as seen in the photograph), including a square clock tower topped by crenelated turrets, and a second tower with crenellation. The photograph was taking during a reception for the 7&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; Biennial International Conference of the Australian and New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>A monument to Sir John Eardley Wilmot (1783-1847) is situated in St Davidâ€™s Park (previously a cemetery), Hobart. Wilmot was Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemenâ€™s Land (ie. Tasmania) between 1843 and 1847 and died of an undiagnosed illness after being removed from office. The multi-tiered cenotaph, sometimes referred to as a mausoleum, was raised by public subscription in 1850 and placed over his remains. It was designed by William Porden Kay (1809-1870). It is in the Gothic style and features the pointed arches, blind arcading, and elaborate stonework often associated with ecclesiastical architecture.     </text>

The top of the narrow five storey building has two narrow â€˜towersâ€™ on each end with a crenelated parapet running between them. In the centre is a shield bearing a â€˜Kâ€™. It focuses on discourses about, debates over, and changing interpretations of i) Australiaâ€™s medievalist political and religious institutions and rituals, ii) its architecture, and iii) its civic environment. In this Collection are items relating to all three of these key areas. Firstly, you will find items that point to the medieval influences and inflections that still permeate and influence our political, legal and religious institutions and traditions. Secondly, you will find numerous examples of neo-gothic and neo-romanesque architecture, and some cases where architectural features are known to have been modelled on specific medieval buildings. Thirdly, you will find items relating to the ways in which medievalism is incorporated into our civic environments and expressed through statues, monuments and war memorials.</text>

                <text>&lt;p&gt;The Mary Ann Simpson (1857-1915) memorial stained glass window is in St David&amp;rsquo;s Anglican Cathedral, Hobart. The lancet window features St Michael as a knight wearing armour of the late medieval period and wearing a sword. He is killing a red dragon which lies at his feet with a spear. St Michael and the dragon are coming out of a representation of what appears to be a niche of delicate stonework in Gothic style with pointed arches.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>The Masonic Club of Tasmania is one of a number of heritage buildings along Hobartâ€™s Macquarie Street. It was originally built as Hutchins School between 1847 and 1849, and was designed by the Tasmanian-born architect William Archer. The bluestone building has sandstone trimmings and is built in the Gothic style, particularly the central tower and turret that feature parapets and crenellation. Another Gothic feature is the large pointed-arch window with tracery on the ground level.</text>
