The shield is reminiscent of one found in the river Thames at Battersea, London. The shield is from pre-Roman Britain and is one of the best examples of British, or Celtic, art. Its appearance at a medieval carnival is perhaps an example of how almost anything from the pre-Modern era is part of an imagined medieval past.
